So - I can't be esrad riding my bike right now. It's really weird but since the last BM race I have had this huge wave of apathy come over me. I just can't go near the bike. Is this normal? When will it go away?
What's the sports psychology behind this? What do I need to do to break the cycle (no pun intended!) ?

It's quite normal if you've been focussing (or worrying) about getting through BM. Some good (but managed downtime) now to consolidate and recover may be necessary.
Stay active, but take a week to do totally non-bike things. Swimming, climbing, whatever. Then take a day to sit with your coach to set goals and a programme for the remainder of the season.

Fairly common after a big high and a decent gap to the next big race (FOC i assume). It's why I had planned to race some Benchmark events and other races leading up to FOC but had to pull my weight at HQ so that didn't happen.
I dug myself a nice hole coming out of track nationals feeling really pumped and feeling anything was possible (hence my unusually high optimism for FOC challenge at the time)but blew to little pieces. I really needed a break and to build into a steady winter based programme.
I would have a week or two off and then prepare to surprise yourself for the FOC!

That's what I tell myself but I still find myself eating tubs of nutella instead and watching TV with no energy.
I've never felt this flat after a race before so this feeling is a little alien to me. Might do the crit tomorrow and then a little mountain biking in the weekend and then focus next week.

Snap - actually just PM'd Fergie for some advice on pretty much the same topic (except obviously a few km/h slower )
Maybe it's the weather? Certainly not feeling very positive about ripping out another 2h14 at FoC this year

Honestly Al I wouldn't touch the Speccy for a week or two (I wouldn't touch a speccy full stop but that's another debate). Will do you the world of good. You will be on full rampage come FOC.
DO IT, DO NOTHING, I DARE YA!!!
Unlike us fuller figured riders who shouldn't get off the bike till Simon calls us to the start line in December

Week off bike and forget about the bike and be a normal person for the long weekend. then sit down goal set for the next block of training next week.

Oooh, lost mojo - not good! Have you looked everywhere? Someone may have just moved it, or could it have morphed into your new appetite? Nah, seriously - (as if) How about just watching the crit - watching others in pain may be the go this week.

You need to load yourself up with anger AlBush, anger and hate will bring your mojo back. Show no respect for anyone unless they are on your team or you’re working for them, everybody else hates you and wants to see you burn, it’s the NZ way, and they have no respect for you Al.
Jens loyalty is for his team, leader, and boss and that’s it .

Unlikely you can train and be on form for everything all year round Al or was that you goal? Sounds like you need some more realistic goals like club nationals 2009. Or just train for BM8 2009 or something, everything until then is irrelevant and just training races, or just time off. Cycling is about work/life balance, life will be a struggle until you sort this out first. Most my training is very early morning so it’s over and gone so it doesn’t ruin the rest of my day/life .
Anger = Mojo.

Jens also says you try and be a nice person to everybody, and what do you get for it? Then he says, NOTHING .
I’m fired up, I’m off to do 2000 repeats of big basted now .

Have a week off Al and then go for a ride for fun not for training and see how much happier you become

Why are you riding? for fun? or results?
When I first started cycling at uni I took it way to seriously, lost weight to climb better, obsessed about training. I rode on my own for about 8 months then made top 15 in Le Race 2005. Then I stopped cycling totally for 3 years, probably cause that was a peak and I couldn't be bothered if I wasn't fast.
I'll probably never be that quick again (uphill at least), nor will I be in the league of the guys I start beside in races but that doesn't stop me riding for fun and racing for fun, something I didn't get back then.
If I don't feel like riding I don't ride, it's not like I _have_ to train or anything. That never lasts more than several days though, and when I go for a ride again I feel great
Realise you ride for fun, and if it's not fun don't ride! But oftentimes you have to start riding again to realise how much fun it is.
