Choice road ride. I did it last summer on a fixed gear---well, actually I carried on to Golden Bay. It's a great ride with few downsides apart from the occasional large truck. Decent road surface, little traffic, rolling terrain, no major climbs, etc. Be sure to stop for water and food at the Pelorus Bridge as there ain't nothing after that til Nelson.

{Posted via mobile.vorb.org.nz} As long as you are comfortable you can do 110Km each day and deal with the few hills, should be a good ride.

QC drive has little traffic and is a beautiful ride. You'll spend lots of time on SH6, enjoy the 40k or so to Havelock. What takes you to the bay?

I'm doing that ride for the first time on the 27th December. I've never ridden more than 50km in a day so I need to get some training in before then, but should be fun. I mapped out the route on mapmyride.com in case you're interested - it gives the elevation too (not much.)

(Also, if you're travelling from Wellington, the ferries are booking out already.)

How about going over the Maungatapu track (see Kennett Bros book) - I did this last year From Picton to Nelson (and back) - sent our tramping gear by carrier company - cost about $35 - and rode with just usual day riding gear. Highly recommended.
