After squeezing 3 bikes onto my bike rack yesterday, I've noticed that a small notch has been rubbed out of my carbon seat stay. I think it MAY be just the protective layer (assuming there is one with carbon?!?), but is this something I should get checked out, or is it only cracks that need to be of concern with carbon?

It is probably just the gel-coat, but without a good photo who knows.

This is from experience with cars and carbon fibre bits:

They have a very thick layer of resin (the smaller the component the lesser the layer) so it should be just a case of redoing the resin coating in that area. If it's hit the weave, then you've got to seriously thing about structural integrity of the component.

Thanks for that, that's basically what I've been thinking too. I'll have a better look tonight and double check it hasn't gone too far through. With the small amount of rubbing I doubt there will be any structural damage to the carbon though, otherwise people would be needing to replace their carbon frames all the time!

It depends on the frame but most older carbon frames have an aesthetic coat on the top which covers all the body filler used to make the frame smooth - this coating also acts as a protective layer.

As frames manufacturers struggle to get their product lighter and lighter these top coats are starting to disappear.

If you can see carbon strands then you're in trouble, if not then you're probably OK. A touch of superglue or clear lacquer into the wound will help protect it.
