I rode it once last year and it was awesome, although there were a few hike-a-bike sections across logs and slips.

I rode it last year with carl and it was a mission. We had to lift our bikes over about 40 fallen trees and parts of the track had eroded away.
But saying that there was alot of nice single track in there and if you go from the motu road its mostly down hill for about 20km.
Ring DOC in opotiki and ask what condition its in as they may have fixed it up, and if they have it would be a mint ride.
Even if it hasn't been fixed I would still recommend it as there are some good sections of track and the scenery is superb.
