 |
|
Kiwi cycling team, Delmaine Fine Foods, have added some international flavour to their menu with the addition of top Canadian pro Dominique Rollin for the Tour of Southland.
Rollin, a six time Canadian champion, is the latest international entry for New Zealand cycling’s premier stage race. The gifted all rounder, who normally rides for high profile American team Toyota-United on the US circuit, comes to Southland following his best year ever.
Standout results in 2008 include winning a stage of the prestigious Tour of California, as well as the overall sprint classification. Other highlights included the King of the Mountain classification at the recent Tour of Missouri, and this week he got off to a good start in Australia’s prestigious Sun Tour with a fifth place on stage one.
These standout results have attracted attention on the international scene and in 2009 the 26 year old will ride with the new Cervelo Test Team alongside Tour de France champion Carlos Sastra and New Zealand’s Olympic star, Hayden Roulston.
In Southland, however, the Canadian is liable to be racing against Roulston and will be looking for strong support from his Delmaine Fine Foods teammates.
Racing alongside Rollin will be superb experience for the young Kiwi riders. The Delmaine Fine Foods team was established as a development squad for up and coming Kiwis, but what this team lack in experience they make up for in talent.
Supporting their Canadian import will be New Zealand reps Ashley Whitehead, Mark Langlands, Matt Sillars and Sam King-Turner.
King-Turner is a solid all rounder and enjoyed good form riding for New Zealand in this year’s Tour of Tahiti where he held the King of the Mountain jersey for two days.
Whitehead has enjoyed positive experiences at the Tour of Southland, with third placings in the Under-23 and King of the Mountain classifications in 2006. He missed 2007 through injury, but in his absence teammate Mark Langlands filled third in the Under-23.
Whitehead, Langlands and Matt Sillars, the current Oceania Under-23 time trial champion, have been gaining experience on the French scene in the last two years and with King-Turner, all four have raced together in New Zealand teams, all of which bodes well for the teamwork that their Canadian team leader will require of them.
Rollin, who this year scored 14 international wins ranging from sprints to breakaways, stage races and time trials, is a dangerous all rounder. At 1.88m, his powerful riding style will suit the rough roads, strong winds and rolling terrain at Southland. And with strong support from his talented Delmaine Fine Foods teammates he is poised to make an impact in his first appearance in New Zealand.

I initially read that as 'melamine foods' with the spicy Asian flavor.

Your a brave man to call him a poser. He racked up a truckload more results than I bet you ever have.
Just Finished 2nd in todays 3rd stage of the Sun Tour behind Baden Cooke and ahead of a good number of well know pros. I'd say hes got a damm good shot at winning.

southland isn't the kind of race you can show up to and win first time round, you need to know the roads and around which corner your going to find yourself grovelling in the gutter for the next 20 minutes.
Rollin has had some great results this year, I think its a little dissapointing that Delmaine couldn't field an all kiwi team...they rode great at welly with only kiwi horsepower

Not sure who you are or what credibilty you have in the cycling world, but by the quote you have made either have no idea or didn't bother to read the Press Release. Dominique has the results on the board against some of the best Road Riders in the World this year, he can climb and sprint. just signed to the Cervelo Test Team!! Poser i think not!!! Why would Delmaine bring a rider of his calibre out for show, he is here to perform end of story.

Just to clear up any confusion regarding the Team for Southland. Had all of our riders been availible for selection for the Team we would have fielded a NZ Team. However 2 of our key riders have final year Uni exams that fall either the week before or the week of the Tour so asked to be excluded from selection. Michael Vink is only 16yrs old and given both his age and the amount of School he has already missed this year with racing it was a no brainer for us too exclude him this year. So we were left with a gap that needed to be filled. We spoke with Heath Blackgrove (Colourplus) regarding a rider to join the squad and he put us in touch with Dominique. Having Dominique on the squad has a 2 fold effect, 1 that we get a chance to have one of the best riders in the USA on our squad and at the Tour and 2 he gives our young riders on the Team a chance to spend a week and a bit training and racing with a Pro. The spin off of this for the riders is huge and the whole Team including our Sponsors are all looking forward to the time Dom has with us. For Mike and I, if we can pick up ideas and his thought's on what makes a good Team great then we are onto a winner as well.
By no means is Dom here for a holiday, he is coming to help our Team achieve the goals we as a Management team have set for the Tour.
This is a positive thing for NZ Cycling to have someone of his calibre racing in NZ.

Cheers for the fill-in taylormade. Sounds like it'll be a great opportunity for the youngsters to ride in support of a top level pro. Hopefully they learn a lot from Rollin.

That dude has some serious HP Would love to see a match up between him and JD.
Good on the people behind bringing him to NZ. You shouldn't have to provide an explanation to people with regards to such a well respected and quality rider. Along with the fact of the input he will have on the younger kiwi riders he is better than any kiwi rider he would be replacing.
Money well spent.
Not often I agree with people around here
