It's effectively the same as ripping a CD, the files are in a format that you can't simply copy them across, so you need some ripping software.
Try something like DVD Decrypt. Although you may want to compress them a bit at the same time - remember that a dual layer DVD has a 9.4 GB capacity - so your hard drive will fill up pquite quickly!

And then Daemon tools to create virtual drivse to mount the images to. Using a good media software package could auto mount images from your harddrive, if you use a media organiser with a video library function. I use Mediaportal, but if you don't need the TV tuner element, try XBMC.

DVD images (from DVD decrypter) can take up a lot of hard drive space. Could also use AGK or Faruse wizard to turn them into Divx AVIs.

Found latest version (3.2.something) of DVD Shrink didn't always work - though maybe manuf'rs are getting cleverer with bad sectors or something - would not auto compress to correct ratio.
Plus, when tried to burn a saved ISO file it froze after burning TOC and crashed out - four DVD's in the rubbish bin later I gave up - this may be the burning software, or the ISO file is getting parc data created into it by DVD Shrink - can burn other content OK, so might be DVD Shrink.
Earlier version that I had worked fine, so maybe if anyone knows a download site where a good version of Shrink resides let us know?

Dvd producers are getting better at using macrovision protection to block a lot of rippers. Unfortunately it can also cause problems with PC playback of legit discs.
