Hey DHFreerider, have you had a chance to have a read of the IMBA's trail building book? I would really recommend getting hold of a copy (I think some of the Chch libraries have it) and reading it. They do talk a lot about more XC trails than DH, but a lot of the principles can be applied to a DH track.

I know my idea of how a good track should be built has changed massively in the last couple of years. I really recommend going along and helping some other track builders (like Ash here) to get an idea of what they are doing and how they are building their trails, and also what sort of problems they have encountered and what they have done to solve these problems.

That book is... http://www.imba.com/resources/trail_building/trail_solutions.html

Actually there is a lot of info on that IMBA site.

Haha... Yup!!!

So you are resurrecting the old Mt Grey DH track? Or just tidying up the walking track? The original DH track was quite good but quite steep! Are you using the part above lake janet?

So is that the one on the front of the hill from the lookout with the zig zags down through the broom that goes down onto the track we built years ago with the wooden ladder drops or the zig zag walking track that goes down the back side of the hill from the big antenna to the culvert at the bottom?

Not sure if you know but if you walk in of the end of the first left switchback in the broom it goes onto the old DH track which was pretty cool and is in trees so no broom clearing to do. It used to come down into that area that got logged. Last time we looked all that was required to link the DH track onto the zig zags was about three meters of broom clearing. The DH track start on the sea side of the lookout.

We spent a fair few weekends up there working on the tracks and fixing holes where trees had fallen over a while ago.
