The past few months, I've been helping out with the PNP MTBing social rides and pre-rides of the courses for the PNP MTB Series. It's been great to see so many women out on these rides, with new people coming along each week. After a bit of discussion with a few of the regular women who come along, I thought it'd be good to set up a mailing list for women MTBers in Wellington.. So the Welly Women MTBers group was born (this morning actually!)

At the moment, the idea is to have women subscribing to the mailing list by emailing: WellyWomenMTB-subscribe[at]yahoogroups.com. This will create a mailing group with a whole bunch of women MTBers email addresses. Anyone who's heading out for a weekday/weeknight/weekend ride can then send an email out to the group by emailing WellyWomenMTB[at]yahoogroups.com to hook up with like-minded riders in Wellington.

This is probably more in the experimental stages at the moment to see if it will work out. Ideally, it would be great to have regular (say, Sunday afternoon) rides happening, but with my training schedule, I'm not really in the position to set a regular ride time up. However, I will be posting up when I'm planning on heading out for a social MTB ride and would love to have some company. If someone out there would like to take on more of a leadership role, then please email me and let me know. Also, if you have any suggestions about how this group can be improved/ideas for group activities, etc, then please email me also.

So, in summary:

Welly Women MTBers - an informal mailing list for female mountainbikers in Wellington (NZ) to organise social MTB rides.

The group can be found here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WellyWomenMTB
Subscribe to the group by emailing: WellyWomenMTB-subscribe[at]yahoogroups.com
You can contact me by emailing: WellyWomenMTB-owner[at]yahoogroups.com

NOTE: Please use the mailing list to only organise MTB rides. There are other places that can be used for posting buy/sell ads and the like, e.g., www.vorb.org.nz

Yes, and VORB is a great way to meet up with other riders (all my riding buddies are from Vorb!), but there are quite a lot of people out there who don't want to sign up to a website and make a public post when they want to go for a social MTB ride. This is just seeing if another avenue will work to get people together for social MTB rides Smile

Like I said, it's an experiment, and if it doesn't work, then hey.. nothing lost.

But if it really picks up, then I think it could be quite an asset to the Wellington MTBing community Double Thumbs Up

Not everyone's preferred option though. The Capitelles communication is all done via a yahoo group very effectively. Very few of the women who participate in that check vorb or sign up for updates from it. Great work by Celia thinking outside the Vorb box to engage with more women after questions came up at Capitelles yesterday.

Of course, Vorb is always useful for spreading the word Smile

I'd just like to say thanks for sorting this out, my wife has been stuck riding with the boys and finds it hard to build up skills when she's being thrown into grades she isn't comfortable with yet.

I've signed her up!

Apologies to those who received the first email message that came through the group. I have since added a PS on the group description that says:

PS: The primary purpose of the mailing list is to organise social MTB rides. Please refrain from spamming the group with unrelated emails. For example, there are other places that can be used for posting buy/sell ads and the like, e.g., www.vorb.org.nz. Cheers!
