http://www.stuff.co.nz/4712924a11.html What the hell is the deal there? Was that on an actual mountain bike trail?

hey there, first post. not riding bikes to often but read vorb news letter for possible trails to mountainboard on. have just seen this in the weekly mailer.

i live at the top of waipapa, and know the shortcut refered to. the people round here tend to take the law into there own hands and the nutter who put this barrier up had better just move house to be honest. the track is not a specific cycle track but everyone from todlers to the elderly cycle round here, and use these shortcuts. theres also bmx jumps next to the shortcut. i can imagine the local bike hoons have ssiped off a grumpy old house owner, or that it may be other kids playing a prank. but thats no excuse. there was a similar case back home in yorkshire, england where someone was killed, so this should be regarded very seriously and the perpatrator taken to task, either legally or physically.

tihs like that happens in Naseby all the time over the holidays, people sharpen sticks and have them pointing out of the jumps so bikers will run straight into them and get impaled. I hope no one has ever actually hit them Sad

I tend to agree with an earlier post, its attempted murder. Hope the young lad gets well soon!

if the kid had been killed it would most definately have been a manslaughter charge - reckless disregard as to whether someone is killed or not - at present it is at least assualt with intent to cause grevious harm; a jailable offence.

Just heard about this on Nat radio...

Cops think its "just a prank" and that they want to give the culprits a "stern word".......jeezuz...tazer the idiots I say...then string them up at Vic park...public hanging..

bloody stupid thing to do.

I put behaviour like that in the same category as dropping a lump of concrete off a motorway overpass - as was done in Auckland about 3 years ago (http://www.vorb.org.nz/ftopic-26910-days0-orderasc-0.html)

Fortunately the consequences in this case weren't as severe, but the mongrel who set the trap wasn't in control of what subsequently happened so I see little difference in terms of how they should be treated.

A "stern word" is so woefully inadequate. Sometimes I despair at how weak our so-called justice system is - a stern word doesn't provide any justice for the kid who was on the receiving end of the trap.

Having once got caught in natures booby trap - one of those nasty native vines hanging out of the trees - I know how scary this can be. Oooooooh I was fortunate that this trap had a fair amount of give, but it pulled me from my bike and gave me a nasty fright. Feels bloody sore too, crushed wind pipe anyone Crazy !!

Hope the lad heals fast and there are no more instances of this stupid human behaviour Crazy

They don't know that is just a prank and I hope the Police aren't presuming it is.

If it turns out to be an adult (eg: an aggrieved grumpy old walker trying to teach kids on bikes a lesson) who should have known better, I would hope they would be charged. I agree this is just as potentially serious as throwing concrete off a motorway overbridge.

I think its worse than the concrete off motorway - that is a pretty random spur of the monent( but stupid ) act. And there is a chance you'll miss.

This sounds like it was well thougth out, planned, excuted.

I'd say its analagous to digging a hole in the road and covering it with a bit of seal colourered ply - no avoiding the hole, no avoiding this trap by teh sounds of it.

A 'stern word' is taking the ssip.

From the Stuff article it sounds like the people who did it are known to the family. Im sure the Police will be on to something like this.

Poor kid. tihs way to spend the holidays.
