Hi again. I’m back with my latest blog. Let’s keep the momentum going and keep those comments coming. They had me pretty glued to the Vorb forum seeing your responses.

Have you noticed the excitement coming from all of the challenges coming out for the Festival of Cycling. If you haven’t challenged someone yet, why not lay down the gauntlet to go against your “mate” in the Festival of Cycling Harbour Ride? It will make it a lot easier for you to focus on training and competing if you are up against someone else rather than the time.

If you’re after some inspiration into challenging others why not lay the gloves down like the “FOC Challenge” boys on Vorb. Fergie, Big Jim and Beeker are duking it out against each other and are creating a lot of hype. It would be well worth supporting these boys and finding out how they all go in their preparation.

Continuing on the thought of preparation, why not grade how you’re going with your training? I would recommend the best way to do this is to have a go at THE RIDE 08.

The RIDE 08 is a testing circuit that starts at the bottom of Evans Pass. The route will test you straight away as you head up Evans Pass and then straight onto the summit road. After going over a few cattle stops you’ll test your descending skills and gain confidence as you shoot down Dyers Pass into the bays. After getting your heart in your throat you will head back to Lyttelton before the final climb up Evans Pass again but from the other side. The RIDE 08 will really help you gauge where you are currently at fitness wise. Don’t worry if you’re not in it to race, you can still enjoy the recreational grade which will go at an “enjoyable” pace along the same route.

Otherwise, make sure you get your training in and enjoy the warmer weather approaching. If you’re unsure where to train or what’s a good bunch ride to join, click here for some further info on the training rides in Christchurch.

That’s all for now

3 rides last week. 2 so far this week and zero conditioning sessions.

My FOC challenge will be a personal one to juggle work, coaching, riding and a social life.

Goals should be realistic and at present any competitive goals would be a pointless exercise. It is tempting to "pie up" and do the Clydesdale grade.

THE RIDE 08 is the day after the next BM8. I'll do both but I have a feeling the legs will feel a little toasted for THE RIDE.
