I have the option of taking a hard tail or fully to next years Karapoti, what would people recommend?

I'll be aiming for a PB of sub 3.30

Hardtail: Specialized Stumpjumper
Fully: Turner Flux

IMHO Flux, it could be built pretty close on weight to the stumpy HT, yet will descend better / safer down the rock garden, will give you a wee bit more traction on the climbs, the frame is still easily shouldered up the staircase, and will leave you felling fresher to absolutely hammer back down the valley to the finish

You are in Wellington - try each, figure out the strengths and weaknesses of each around the course. Pick the one that works best for you.

Flux, Probably lighter and betterer traction.

And will look way cooler.

Personally I think fitness rather than the bike is more important if you want to go under 3:30.

Grumpy and Colin speak the truth.

And I very much doubt that there is two guys on Vorb that know their way around the Akatarawa's like they do.

Hardtail.

I've done an OK Karapoti on an old Stumpie. The climbs do not require the extra funky traction of a fully. They are either smooth or carries.

The downs are also all fine on a hardtail. The rockgarden is better on a fully I guess, but thats prob the only bit.

However I will defer to Slacky above as he has done a lot of laps of the course and knows his stuff.

The downs ARE all fine on a HT. But you gt far more recovery in on a fully. You don't get as beaten up (and neither does your bike).

Mr Aldred needs to have a good ride on a bike from this decade

Fully IMO.

I had an XTC and went to an Anthem, and while slightly heavier it was much better on some of the rougher sections - a couple of the pinches on Dopers spring to mind.

Ride what you like, but like sackboi said, you'll get less fatigued on a fully.

Davo, you are showing your age.

My ride might be old and tired, but she turned a 2hr 46 (I think?) Poti' time. And that was after mtb National Champs and a stupid course 3.5hr Mountain 1/2 Marathon the previous weekend. I love to blow my own trumpet.

What do you yoofs know about teh fatigue?
