Posted: Fri 26th Sep 8:13pm Post subject: Broken Spokes... New Wheel Time?? |
 |
|
Hey people, this question coming out from someone with a pretty limited knowledge of bike repair.
I have a Kona Stuff which I've been using for XC, and a few small jumps, drops and stuff. probably would be better off with a full suspension bike, but I'm not in the position to change bikes at the moment. Anyway...
I noticed I had one broken spoke (rear wheel) after a day out at woodhill a few days back.
Stupidly, i forgot about it, and went for a 'relatively' demanding ride today going off some 1m drops onto flat concrete.
After a few repeats, I noticed a not-so-pretty sound, and looked down and saw 4 more spokes had just snapped (rear wheel). Pretty much all the spokes are ridiculously loose now.
So just looking for some advice... would I be able to get a few replacement spokes and somehow tighten everything up?
Or would I want to be looking at a new wheel?
I really need the rear of my bike to be in good shape as it gets a bit of a thrashing for a hardtail.
Cheers for the help, much appreciated.

You need to get the wheel rebuilt with new spokes. The old ones would have been overstressed now.

mate just get a new wheel, a rebuild will cost you upwards of $100 anyway, and im picking your bearings will be shagged too if you have been hitting it that hard

How about rebuilding wheel vs. buying a new wheel? (cost)
I think it's the stock wheel it came with at the moment... I wouldn't know if it would be worth trying to get a 'better quality' wheel which would handle a bit more strain...?

When some spokes snap, its a safe bet the rest are shagged.
Get new spokes.

Being Spokes I know a bit about Spokes.
I would normally charge $50 Labour and $1.50 to $2 a spoke.
Get someone who knows about wheels to have a look at it. It could just be that you have rubbish spokes, which at the moment is quite common.

hucks to flat are bound to be a wheel breaker. get a new wheel, and also somewhere else to ride

Out of curiosity, I just replaced the broken spokes so it appeared to be fine.
However, as soon as I went off the same drop-off, two other spokes immediately snapped.
I guess my question is, if I get the wheel re-constructed (or even buy a new wheel)... will it be able to handle going off there without just snapping again?
I don't want to spend a couple of hundred dollars to be back where I started.
'Should' a Kona Stuff be able to handle meter drops to ground??

any bike being repetadly dropped hard 1m to flat will eventually break somewhere.
prob lucky its only your spokes that are breaking
maybe you could get a super strong DH wheelset and go back and do your drops to flat so you can break the frame next?

drops to flat aren't really that good for wheels of any sort, if you dont destroy the spokes chances are that your bearings will be shot soon
