If there was one thing I would be telling people getting into a new sport to skimp on, it would NOT be a helmet Crazy
Great in theory though Spokes

Well it would be nice if everybody had as much money as you, but many dont. As long as the helmets meet Standard testing then they will be fine.

Or would you rather kids stay at home watching TV?

Not my point.
Using the argument about perceived wealth is very very lame too mate.
Money is not the reason many people don't get into sport. If the child wants to watch TV they will regardless of a BMX sitting outside in the garage.

I'm not going to argue a ridiculous argument in regards to money Spokes. How many kids do you know go through 5 or 6 sports before they turn 20
Cricket in the summer, soccer or rugby in the winter, own a bike to ride to school with ect.
Money might be a factor high end but almost every sport has a cheaper alternative.

Helmets are the most important peice of equipment cycling has, I wouldn't go aroung telling people a cheeper helmet is OK. Read the letter "I" in the statement.
HTH
Now I'm going riding on my expensive Motorbike just to ssip you off

So youre saying a cheap FF helmet that has standards cert is not good enough to get started with? Or should they get Carbon Troy Lee's? (You gotta look after that Carbon Big Grin ).

And for cycling BMX is the cheap alternative.

And what bike do you have? And FFS dont say a Harley.

sorry but i have to agree with the istepinyard guy.

you have to look at how much you value your brain eh.

I ride motorbikes as well as being an avid mountain biker one thing i would NEVER even attempt to save money on is something to protect my head on any of my bikes.

i appreciate where your coming from re the cost for start up but for go the fancy clip in pedals and all that and get a decent helmut your brain might thank you for it eh.

You may be able to get some form of sponsorship or discount as a local bike store aswell. Or even some kind of community grant to get a set of helmets to loan to kids at the weekly BMX meets Smile

I do understand this. But a Standards approved or DOT approved Lid will be fine. It may not be trendy but it will do.

Clips are not an issue here, the budget does not allow for that. Trying for racing for under $400 if all gear bought new including bike.

Thats my goal, low yes. But I want to try and see if I can do it. If it doesnt work then so be it. We are talking about 7-8-9 year old kids here though so it doesnt need to be flash with skinnys etc.

2nd hand would be better for them if they can find a suitable bike for that.
