I've seen on mtbr people having problems with chain rub also. Would frame tape stop the wear of the brake cable?

I should have done that too
I reckon that would work for a while, before that too would wear away

I would give the area a good clean with some meths then touch it up with some matching paint and cover the area with clear scuff tape (available from and half decent motorbike shop)and keep an eye on it.

yep, you can get it from just about any motorbike shop. it's called scuff stop, or just ask for scuff tape. you can buy it in 1/2m or 1m lengths. it works a treat and sticks really well. relatively cheap as well.
i found that it actually doesnt wear through, as it just slips over it.

Are both cables doing it - or only the braided metal hose? Presumably plastic hoses won't be as bad - although the rub could then wear the hose instead of the frame. Routing isn't that different from the Heckler -I had no problems there.
Maybe some sort of plastic tape or sleeve over the braided hose also to prevent metal on metal rub? Perhaps a short bit of heat shrink (though you would need to undo the hose to get it on)?

Try using a solid spacing between the cables to push them out a bit wider and not sub on the seat tube. I have seen it done on Giants and work really well.

Stink pete. It's always a heartbreak finding your first scratch.
I concur with your thoughts on the chainstay rub - my 'free gets the same gouging from bouncing chains - so I put electrical tape around the chainstay just like you. Just keep an eye on the tape, because it will wear over time

nah its just that side, as that side of the swing arm has a brace where the other side doesn't
Will try the motorcycle stuff

Or try a cable tie around your seat tube with cable ties around each cable (if you get my meaning).
That chain rub on the chainstay was obvious when I built up a couple of Blur LT's a few weeks ago.
For this I would reccomend taking off the tape you put on, thoroughly cleaning the frame and applying some Velcro to the area. Trim the corners so they are rounded to stop the velcro from lifting.

I've got a bunch here if you want a patch - it'll save you buying a whole new roll

I got mine yesterday, went for a ride today and loved it. More in-depth description to come.
Here is a pic in the meantime...
