The often-ness really only makes sense when related to the episdoes of dirtiness?

If it aint been dirty, why clean it?
Which is a {possibly crusty} variation of the " if it aint broke, don't fix it" approach...

Perhaps a how often:dirty ratio would be illuminating.

Or, not.

For me its maybe 1 or 2 times a year on the good bike, which includes pulling it fully apart (heatset, BB etc). the single speed I think has been cleaned once in its life Laugh Out Loud

depends. if its really muddy, lightly hose it off after the ride, but otherwise just once a month or two as part of general lubing and maintenance.

but it doesn't have a multigear drivetrain

Yeah where's the option for "when it's real dirty"?
If I'm riding my bike then it's having to go in the boot of my car and I'm having to handle the frame and wheels a lot so I rinse it off if it's a bit gross.
I have to wash my dog after almost every ride at Woodhill, damn cows.
