The often-ness really only makes sense when related to the episdoes of dirtiness?
If it aint been dirty, why clean it?
Which is a {possibly crusty} variation of the " if it aint broke, don't fix it" approach...
Perhaps a how often:dirty ratio would be illuminating.
Or, not.

For me its maybe 1 or 2 times a year on the good bike, which includes pulling it fully apart (heatset, BB etc). the single speed I think has been cleaned once in its life

depends. if its really muddy, lightly hose it off after the ride, but otherwise just once a month or two as part of general lubing and maintenance.
but it doesn't have a multigear drivetrain

yeah i guess thats the one thing i do clean most aye, the drive train,
washings all good but ya have to show that
you ride it and not just clean it aftr riding to the dairy,
anyway i clean the drive train and replace parts there most

Yeah where's the option for "when it's real dirty"?
If I'm riding my bike then it's having to go in the boot of my car and I'm having to handle the frame and wheels a lot so I rinse it off if it's a bit gross.
I have to wash my dog after almost every ride at Woodhill, damn cows.

Whenever it gets dirty
I usualy spend all day on sunday after the black stump cleaning my bike (yes it does take 8hrs to fully clean a bike after black stump!)

In Palmy in winter I used to wah my bikes every ride, and over a dry summer about once a month
up here so far I've washed my bikes about 6 times in 4 months
