I bought a jump bike a while ago and have been riding it for the last 6 months or so and decided to give it a once over. ...

I for one would rather not wait for such a failure around the steering area.

If someone hasn't had a crash on their dh bike in 6 months should they then stop wearing a fullface?

The unwritten rule is that the steerer tube should come up t o the center of the highest stem bolt.

The Pig has quite a high stackheight....the Crank Bros Directset's are the lowest headset I know of and should give you an extra 10mm at least (depending on the model you choose)

How long is your current stem?

I've got an old Kore stem kicking around that has a stack height of 25mm or thereabouts

2/3 clamped is not to bad, especilly if its a high stem like the one you're running
leave it as is & spend your coin on something else Double Thumbs Up

So things don't fatigue over time in HuntawayFR world? Eh?

yes they do, & WHEN they do, you replace them

I was just making the point that it obviosly wasn't a problem before hand, so why is it a problem now?
its a 43mm high stem, so at 2/3's it clamped to about 30mm of steerer tube which is fine Double Thumbs Up

I agree that he 'should' be fine in this case.
BUT - replacing something as crucial as a bar or stem after it fails... well that's just stupid. Replacing it prior to that will save your teeth... and maybe neurosurgery. Smile

yeah that is ture, the term "failure" doesn't necessarily mean a catastrophic failure though,
I was more meaning "if you notice something starting to fail, then replace it"

the "steerer tube up to the middle of the top bolt on the stem" rule seems like the best way to go though. Double Thumbs Up
I'll just keep my dodgy "she'll be right" fixtures to myself Wink Big Grin
