Yeah i'd be stoked with six hours to be honest but 5 would be swell. I just find long grinds uphill totally devastating Sad Having said that, since buying the Tarmac its been getting easier the harder I've gone.

Random quesiton, whats the average PIS ya'll are inflating your tires? I just have standard kenda tubes and crust Speshy Mondo Pros at around the 100psi mark but should it be more?

depending on your weight 100psi is probably ok,

for reference I weigh 93kg and inflate to 110psi. slightly more or less to taste.

Neither Kuratau or Hatepe could really be categorised as long climbs. Hatepe is steep and it hurts, but only cos you've got 140ks in your legs by then.

kuratau (sp?) is the single hardest climb. one of those hills that hides behind many corners.

Hatepe usually doesn't hurt too bad if you get into a good bunch early after Kuratau, plenty of time to feed and rest before the mad 20km dash to the line.

The group option is only really open for the faster guys. I was shepherding my 15yr old sidekick and my bung knees round the lake last year. It was just us two and without my help/encouragement she would never have got round. The look on her face when she crossed the finish line was worth it.

No-one around us had much clue of getting a group going. But that was ok in the last 60km, I was stopping often enough to stretch my knees and wait for sidekick. Looking forward to this year, I think...... Crazy

The first 17 odd km are nearly all up. Thats the killer on the multi lap rides. I never noticed on the first lap what a climb it was. Yay for fresh legs.

Back to energy/hydration.

I did my first "big' ride on Sat at 81kms in what was a rather hot day. Two bottles with 750ml of leppin enduro booster whihc at their reccomended dosage would have given me exactly two hours. I essentially ran out at two hours and was riding for three so had to buy some water from a dairy. At that point I pretty much ran out of steam at the 75km mark from olnly ingesting water.

So what I get from that is - leppin enduro works great for me and the dosage they reccomend is right for me - I just didn't bring enough for the ride. Given that timing I would need at least 4 bottles for taupo. Sounds like alot compared to you other guys but we are all different I guess!!

As I said though, only my first real semi-long ride so plenty more experimenting to be done. I still need to see if supplemeting that mix with gels might help more etc

Was encouraging though, so I feel slightly better about taupo Smile

Interesting... I'm no expert at all, but...

I have completely different experiences to this, and can happily ride for 4+ hours on a couple of bottles. I usually drink a big cup of tea (close to 1L) and chug 4 bits of toast in the morning before heading out. I am a big guy (6'2.5" and close to 90kg). I typically have one bottle of water, and one of fairly diluted replace - 1.5 scoops for a standard bottle. Often, I'll end the ride with some fluid in the bottle.

Are you sure you're dehydrating, or could it be you're craving some sort of sugar? Do you eat solids at all?

Does anyone know the %gradiant of the different hill around the lake? The last time I did the ride (2005) I didn't have any way of recording this info, and I can't really remember just how steep they are.

This is a very good point - many people will need to eat something solid on a long ride. I always liked bananas and/or jam or honey in wholemeal bread rolled up with the crusts cut off. Just wrap them individually in tin foil and eat when desired.

and, something I learnt on Saturday afternoon, get the banana skins out of your pocket at the end of the race/ride BEFORE you take your gloves off... Crazy
