NZer Justin Kerr riding for the TTI-SDV-Peugeot team won the 116kM 8th stage today in a 3 man breakaway that was ahead of the bunch for most of the stage. Shane Archbold riding for the same team won the bunch sprint for 4th to retain the Green Points jersey. GC is unchanged with Eric Drower (BikeNZ) 2nd at 2:13. The race finishes with a 73kM stage in Noumea tomorrow.


Thursday 18 September
After yesterday’s time trial and today’s stage Eric Drower is 2nd on GC. Eric won the time trial to move up from 5th on CG, then rode well today in the 115km stage that included an 8km dirt climb, finishing third on the hilltop finish along with the tour leader. After Eliot Crowther withdrew ill yesterday Brett Dawber punctured today at the foot of the climb then broke his chain, he swapped his bike with Blair James who finished on Eliot’s bike.

Wednesday 17th September
After 5 stages of the Tour of New Caledonia Eric Drower is the best placed of the NZ team. Eric placed 4th in yesterdays 82km stage to move from 9th to 5th on GC. Eric is 2:43 behind the GC leader, but only 1.01 behind 2nd place. The best placed rider before yesterdays stage was Eliot Crowther in 5th place but Eliot lost 27 mins yesterday and will not start today due to illness. Todays stages are a 75km road stage followed by a 12km time trial.


Tour of New Caledonia Update 1

Cambridge cyclist Eric Drower has won the prologue of the 10-day Tour of New Caledonia. Representing the BikeNZ team, Drower covered the 4.4km time trial in 5mins 31secs to be presented the Tour's first yellow jersey by ex-Tour de France Race Director Jean-Marie Leblanc. Drower who placed second in the recent Tour of Tahiti is part of a five rider team that includes Brett Dawber (Christchurch), Eliot Crowther (Auckland), Blair James (Auckland), and Jonathon Stockwell (Dunedin).
