Southstar Adventures are working this week in the Mangamahoe Forest to build new trails on behalf of New Plymouth Mountain Bikers.

The set of trails is being constructed on New Plymouth Distric Council land within the Mangamahoe Forest. New Plymouth District Council approved contractors (Southstar Adventures Ltd - www.southstaradventures.com ) are being used to build trails in the northern area of the forest that was logged last summer.

The first set of trails are being constructed on the top of a hill with links back to the existing network. They take advantage of the flat area available and present the occasional great view out to the Tasman Sea.

Work is scheduled to go through to the end of this Friday. A review will then be held with NPDC Parks staff to go over the plans for further trails to be constructed in logged areas and those parts of the forest where trees have been pruned.

The funding to pay the contractors initially comes from Transit NZ compensation money received in 2001 for trails lost due to the re-alignment of SH3.

Further updates and photographs of the new trails will be posted on the club's website:

The new trail is now finished up on the top of the hill to the north of the Samuari Set area. It could do with lots of riding before the rain comes on Saturday night.

For Friday Jeff and James are moving down to the river flat area to the east of the hill where they have been working since Monday.

Check it out!

Rode the trails today - the new top trail is a cracker already, and once the trees start to grow will be lovely. The views from up top down to the river are brilliant. Will try and get to the lower trails soon as well. Top stuff. Not quite Vegas, but great for just 5 minutes up the road Smile Double Thumbs Up

Is there any more work planned?

I was out there on Sunday and it doesn't look any different from when I was there two weeks before (apart from the small trees planted everywhere).

I was under the impression there was more work to be done. No?

There is more work planned but the club needs to get some more money and willing active people to make things happen, see:
