And by no man made ones i mean nothing with structures.

Any suggestions to add?

OTH and MT Eden are both very much off limits, you get in big do do if you get caught.

OTH was the start area of Wednesday night rides inAuckland.

If you ride the protected areas, such as Mt Eden, you are basically doing the worst thing possible for advocacy getting you some real riding areas. Please don't.

That said, all those little lumps listed barely qualify as hills.

EXCUSE ME but how the kcuf do you think skaters got gnikcuf skate parks. BY RIDING WHERE THEY SHOULDNT.

to get what we want we have to take it, ALL councils are REACTIVE not PROACTIVE if you think not riding places is going to get us places to ride our bikes you must be living in another world.

keep sending you letters, cause shedding paper is really exciting ay

If you really want somewhere to ride, be proactive yourself and move somewhere that has actual hills and large bush areas. Expecting councils to somehow make land suitable for riding appear in the middle of a big flat city is laughable at best, and deliberately riding somewhere where there is very good reason for you not to ride is a pretty immature attitude.

If you don't want to get wet, don't stand in the rain. If you want to ride trails, don't start looking in the middle of a city.

do you relise auckland is made up of many small hills called volcanoes.

the trails dont have to be in a "park" they could just be little bits of single track in the large number of patches of bush in auckland linked together with short stints on a road to make up cross country loops.

not expecting full blown downhill runs in the middle of town, just some kool 40 second to 1min runs would be sick

i do, i lived there for several years until recently. All i'm saying is that bikes are a very small user group in Auckland and if you make a scene by riding all over the no-riding areas, all you do is reinforce the image of riders as destructive and law-ignoring menaces. I can think of two cities where paper-pushing has made massive improvements in the councils attitudes to bikes - Dunedin and Welly - but i can't think of a single example of vigilate trespassing getting anywhere. Without naming names, did the infamous yellow sticker crew actually achieve anything? Not that i know of.... skating is a bit different as it was damaging private property, and also affects a much larger user group in the 'teen destruction' category. Keeping the kids out of trouble is a sure-fire granny pleaser.

when i said all councils i was meaning the ones in auckland region.

i used to send letters to the councils asking for something to be done never got a reply.

just recently been riding places we should, and been seen, and chatted to the rangers at these such places, and guess what.

they said to get what we want we have to take it, and they encouraged us to carry on.

That's out of the city though, which is a bit different. No amount of riding on Mt Eden for example will help it being accessable.

You both have good points they're just DIFFERENT points.
Soba is right that there are some places that you shouldn't ride if you don't want to really ssip people off and give a bad image to mountain bikers.
Giantman is right that there are some places that are perfect for mountain biking, get used for stuff all else and will suffer little damage from single trails.
So if you combine those 2 points and stay clear of areas that will cause problems (such as protected tourist sites) and go for less controversial options then you should be sweet. If you find somewhere really good to ride but you're not really allowed then make a good case to the council... it might not get you anywhere but at least you can say you tried.
