I'm looking to buy a cross country mountain bike. My budget is around $800 - $1,200. Ideally I would like a reasonably high spec bike that's a few years old and has been well looked after rather than a lower spec newish bike. Of course I want the best bike I can get for the price (who wouldn't). Ideally soft tail, but am also interested in hard tails if they are a goood bike.

Can anyone help???????

Hey, My mates got a 07 specialized hardrock xc (hard tail-19 inch frame/large) it has been upgraded with 06 hayes 9s(brand new 4months ago), 05 fox talas 130 rlcs,06ish x7 rear mech, 04 x9 shifters, 07 crankbrothers candy sl pedals,06 raceface evolve xc flat bars and it could probably come with a cateye speedo if you ask him nicely. wheels could probably do with a true and the tyres are verging on becoming semi slicks, but other than that it's in pretty sound condition, Do you have a phone number he could get hold of you on?(I should realy make him create a vorb account of his own {Blush}), Cheers Kieran

my advice would be to go for a hardtail. the only reason I went otherwise was because my dream bike was going for 3k (normally 10k). other than that sweet deal I've always found hardtail XC bikes are better value for money than softtail XC bikes.
