how do the steel frames you're all describing climb?? They all seem to be up around the 2kg mark and seem to be "good" - good climbers - good descenders - but not great at either????????

{Posted via mobile.vorb.org.nz} they will climb similar to all other HT of similar geometry.

If geometry is equal, the stell will be slightly heavier on the uphill, but more supple/comfortable, and its 'springyness' makes for a less harsh downhill if its rough.

Alloy will be lighter and transfer power a bit better, but will be harsh and transfer the vibration through too the rider a bit more.

Carbon all depends on how it is layered - so a bit from section A a bit from section B

One is not better than the other, they are just different. Better depends on what you want it to do Smile

S-Works or high Stumpys are good. I have a slightly older model and it rocks. the new ones must be good.

The Stumpys have wonderful heritage.

Most hardtails will feel pretty similar unless they are different matierials.

This is open to argument of course, but it's not one i'll be listening to.

Another vote for hard tail stumpies Double Thumbs Up (they could only be better if specialized made them in steel).

Specialized did make them in steel for many years Wink

They did last year if you count the Stumpjumper Classic...

The Cotic Soul is a nice frame...I like my one. Have you considered a titanium frame i.e. Cotic Soda or similar. (I think Cove make one that is supposed to be good?)

(edit) I noticed you have a F100 fork-it might be a good idea to check the axle to crown length to see what that would do to the geometry on the Cotic if you were going to buy one. (Don't fox forks have quite a short axle to crown height compared to marzocchi?)

Yeah but do any of the old ones have 1/1/8 inch steerer tube disk mounts and geometry based on the current models/100mm fork? They made an anniversary model in 07 with steel frame, canti lever brakes, 1inch threaded headsets and ridged forks

Yeh - i think you're right - general consensus is that marzocchi are generally longer and fox are a little shorter. Can't find fox's measurements online - how do you actually measure it?

Anyone know of a website that has the axel to crown specs for comparison????

2009 Marzocchi Corsa Cento = 467.0mm
2009 Fox F100 RLC = 470.9mm

Thanks again for the heads-up Double Thumbs Up
