Dunno what 42 traverse is like at this time of year. Have you looked in the Kennett Bros' book?

I've been riding out of Nat Park. It was flat and fun, and the Kennett book pointed us in the right direction. The puddles were frozen when I was there. Crazy
On the other side of the mountain you could try treetrunk gorge, its nice. Once again the Kennett book is good for directions etc.
Or ride to waihaha (?) hut (western side of Lake Taupo). Havent done it but heard good things, pretty sure thats in the Kennett book too.
42 traverse is great, but has the potential for being very cold and muddy at this time of year, not to mention a very chilly river crossing at the bottom.

Smile
