Depends on what perspective you want to define "better" by....
"Better" mountain biker on race resuts = Absalon.
"Better" mountian biker on fan boi marketability = Peat.

Pretty much. I'd say Absalon would be closer to Peat in a DH race than Peat would be to him racing XC. |
DH boys are fitter than you give them credit for, Justin Leov does pretty well on an XC bike

where is the sam hill option? 
everyone is going on about how fitter elite DH'ers are than you give them credit blah blah. It should be noted that the elite XC rides are far better techincally than you wanna be MX scum give them credit for as well

Rough guess I'd say Peat... who probably also pulls more skanky chicks of dubious legal age as well. Comes back to fan boi marketability that one.

to be honest, that ain't particularly hard and i would expect any top flight cyclist to be able to do that .. well maybe not a BMX'er

Yeah - I was going to say something along those lines. I remember seeing the italian XC team hitting double down (sans helmets) on their XC bikes with the seats all the way up during the 'vegas world champs.
There's no lack of skill there - just a lesser amount of travel.
It's a dumb question - kinda like asking if Valentino Rossi or Ricky Carmichael is a better rider.
