Did anyone else see the public notice in the press yesterday about consent/notification for building tracks on Mt Cavendish? ...

Where would they put the tracks??? I gaze out the office window straight up the gondola everyday. Above the summit road is like solid rock and almost vertical...

if it includes the lyttleton secnic reserver as well as the mt cavendish reserve my guess is they're doing to bring people down the old access track to the car park in the saddle just before the road goes thru the cutting

makes sense cos like you said straight down it's major cliffs to the road - and the other way (towards the top of bridle path) whilst fully of rocky goodness would conflict with the walking track

finding a way down the bluffs under the road will be fun - you can pick your way down, but mega steep in places

I wodda thought a good moderate gradient line would be to the saddle, into the existing John Britten Track, then down through John Britten reserve (seem to remember mention of MTB track there as part of the new subdivision a couple of years back), hook around the north end of the crags near the cell/digital microwave tower then back traversing above Morgans Valley to the gondola base station. Anything taking a more direct line down the hillside is gonna have to be extremely well built to be sustainable.

Between john britten reserve and the gondola is almost vertical rock cliffs! There is a 4wd track running round above the subdivision but not a good mtb track.

I am sure there is a line down there somewhere...

if you drop down to the very bottom of the cliff line you can then drop down, trouble then is you're left traversing back up under the cliffs, since the reserve only extends down a little way, and it's all private land (in the process of being sub-divided) underneath

I think the planned mtb track off the john britten reserve was just intended to take you down to the top or Major Hornbrook Rd (staying on top of the ridge)

I'll come and give you hand - how about we put the base station at the top of bowenvale ave, and the top station in the car park at the top of vic park
