Now in Auckland, you have reports of the cops in not attending the immediate aftermath of robberies in the main street of Panmure all of 300m from the police station because there are no cars available. The police will drive down from the station to pick up lunch even.

That's not the Police, thats the Auckland mentality. When i lived there i was amazed at their reliance on cars, anything you can't see from your house is a compulsary car trip.

Going back a long, long time ago... Cyclesport NZ sponsored the coppers in Wanganui with a couple of Trek Y-bikes. Don't know if they ever got used though apart from publicity shots for the local rag about how good they'd be for policing on.

No, it is a New Zealand wide mentality. Every town in the country has a big box store on cheap industrial land away from residential areas, and large tracts of recent housing without corner shops or any other services within walking distance.
Living in central Auckland, I am much less dependant on cars than people in my old home town.

You might be less dependant, but what about your neighbours? The difference is that in small towns you might need to travel a greater distance and thus use a car, whereas in Auckland most things are close yet car use seems to be emphasised even more than the 5 or 6 other places in NZ i've lived.

very impressed with some of your comments edward. add to the large tracts of housing a distinct lack of green space and you have our kcufed regional growth plans and a horrible urban sprawl. in central auckland you have cornwall park and the auckland domain along with a whole heap of small parks. try and find a dozen parks in the new development area's...
"Cops on bikes" sounds a bit less appealing than "sboob on bikes however".......

I think cos on bikes in Auckland CBD would be very effective, but less so in other districts with greater ares to cover. North Shore Police get out of their cars quite regularly.
