Now I have a few km's under my belt, I have a question.
What's the technique for slowing/braking (not locking up the wheel). Soft pedaling slows me but to slow faster I need to use legs, but how? Whatever I am doing feels awkward and jerky.
Thanks for any tips

Thanks for any tips | I just stopped pedaling. If I wanted to slow faster I put in abit of resistance from my legs, felt really weird but the more I rode the smoother and less wierd it felt.

Muzza, drop your heels a bit more. Time smooths things out.
Learn to skid, and roll your jeans up

Thanks for the advice. I'll try that.
Oli, the bike is going great, rides well and I am enjoy riding a fixie geared bike. I'm still learning the small differences between riding a freewheel and fixed wheeled bike, that can add an exciting moment or two to a ride.
With 27 1/4" tires, have no rolling qualities, and my lack of fitness means the gear is a fraction low. But it shouldn't take long to grow into it. Cheers

There's no substitute for practice. At first I found it awkward like you do but but now my braking is much smoother and feels more natural. I barely touch the brakes now.
That reminds me, I'd better check my chain...

Saddle height is crucial - so experiment. Best way to tel if it's right is ultra high cadence efforts. If you can stay seated without bouncing, it's good.
