Fair enough.

Inumerates, illiterates, and kiddies to young, all should stay away from sports til they can do the maths?

Meh.

What a strange thing though to do that to a little girl who probably just wants to have fun.

Toppled truck trashes river
Friday, 25 July 2008
JILL MCKEE/Southland Times

A salvage operation is underway to remove a truck and container-load of domestic rubbish which toppled into Southland's Makarewa River last night.

The truck was transporting two shipping containers full of rubbish from Gore when the front container became unbalanced and hit the side of a bridge over the Makarewa Flood Channel on SH96 between Mataura and Winton, about 5pm.

The driver stopped the truck, but as it came to a halt the container fell off, landing on the riverbank.

The cab also tipped over the side of the bridge and landed upside-down on top of the dislodged container.

The 32-year-old driver, the owner-operator of the truck, was not injured.

Environment Southland senior technical officer Graeme McKenzie told NZPA a crane was being taken to the site this morning to lift the truck and container out of the river.

The truck and its load would be cut free of each other, then the container would be emptied before it was shifted, he said.

Council staff at the site estimated about 10 per cent of the waste in the container – between 250kg and 500kg – had spilled into the river and was being washed downstream.

Mr McKenzie said a lot of the floating debris would wash up on beaches or bends in the river and staff would assess what scale of clean-up would be required later today.

The truck was carrying about 150 litres of diesel at the time of the accident and "a reasonable proportion" of that had been lost, he said.

An oil boom was placed across the river 3km-4km downstream from the bridge last night to try and catch both debris and fuel but the river was flowing too quickly for it to be effective.

Mr McKenzie said an oil slick was visible in the river this morning between the crash site and the boom.

The council has warned riverside industries and landowners who take water from the Makarewa and Lower Oreti Rivers to be aware of the pollution.
