Im talking about just the frame by the way.
I realise the bikes come with different spec.

is it just the rear suspension design thats changed, to give it more travel - or does the head tube angles, BB etc. All vary between the different models? im assuming the 8 and 9 would be the more downhill orientated models, as apposed to the 7

they have 7, 8 and 9 inches travel. There are small geo tweaks as well, and they use different axles... qr on the 7, 135mm bolt through on the 8 and 150mm on the now discontinued 9. The 7 is the 'freeride' model and the 8 the DH, although they're both good at both really.
As always a test ride is better than a few words...

Yarr. I love my Demo, best bike I've owned, but the brand is over priced.

Of the current shape, the differnce is the head tube and the length of the shock. the 7 has a 1.5 and a shorter stroke and length shock, the 8 has a 1 1\8th head tube, a longer shock and slightly steeper angles for it.
Of the old ones the 8's and 9's have different frames, you can spot a 9 as it has 2 "rib" bits going from the bb up to the upper linkage pivot. they are also heavier

The Demo 7 actually has 7.3" rear travel with the travel limiter on the shock (2.375" shock stroke), or 7.7" without (2.5" shock stroke). The 2007 onwards Demo 8 has 8.4" with a 2.75" shock stroke.
Both have 135mm x 10mm rear axles, 73mm BBs. As stated above the difference in frames is the head tube (which makes the 7 frame 1/3 lb heavier I'm told), and the lack of front shifter cable boss's on the down tube of the 8 frame. Head angle is either 66/65deg for the 7, or 65/64 for the 8 (due to the longer fork).
I wouldn't say they're necessarily heavy -- both frames are over 1lbs lighter than a Glory frame for e.g. If I remember correctly my large Demo 7 was approximately 41lbs standard, but as someone said above, the wheels (and tyres) are pretty light though.
The only downside to the bike as far as I'm concerned is that it doesn't pedal well. But then I didn't buy the bike to pedal, so it's really a non-issue. And the effectiveness of the rear suspension more than makes up for it anyway. Plus it rails corners like an SX trail.

they are beautifull bikes! i got mine just before secondary schools and its treating me very well!
the other differenece between the 7 and the 8 is also that the wheelbase is slightly shorter off memory on the 8, obviously because of its DH orientation.
you probably dont need to worry about the 9 though because off memory theyre are only frames left in the country which are size small still from 05. ( unless your buying 2nd hand of course)
the 9 was made to be a burlier freeride bike than the 7.
in terms of weight who really cares, yes they are no cross country bike but i managed to ride mine all the way up cannons point and pass alot of people on cross country bikes that started well before me.
a major advantage is definately the suspension set up, it works amazingly well and tracks the terrain extreamly well thanks specializeds FSR setup.
and as said above the only disadvantage is the rims which could be slightly too light for your needs if your a rough rider. But the brass nipples and double butted spokes are great.
All in all they are a fabulous bike and i would highly reccomend one.
