Posted: Thu 17th Jul 11:12pm Post subject: A Ramble About A 6 Speed Dh Cassette On Carrier. |
 |
|
Ok, Ive recently had a bit of a project that a few people have been interested in and Ive finally got my esra into gear and sorted it out. If your not interested in the rambling of a deluded DHer who cant write to save himself, lurk off to some other part of the interwebby now. The rest of you sad bunch, read on.
Cassettes biting into hope hub have always ssiped me off. It doesn’t matter that they don’t affect the performance of the hub; it just seems like such a sin. On my old Turner I ran a XT 32-11 cassette with carrier and that solved the problem. The top 3 rings never got used due to roadie deraliers not incompatibility with rings bigger than 23T.
When I got My new Ironhorse Sunday it was equip with a roadie cassette (23-11). Fine I thought, I would try it with the Hope. She was still cutting in. I also discovered with roadies on DH bikes you always double shift as the changes in ratio are too small for the stomping of DH
Recently I read this article on sicklines.com and thought it was a pretty sneaky idea but it would still cut the tihs out of my beloved hopes". I mentioned it to Stiffy at HQ a few weeks later and he bought up the idea of getting the 6 speed cassette and centring it on the free hub body. Less sideways chain strech, less chance of chain snagging in spokes and no more chain not clicking into the 11T. Seemed to make a bit of sense but there was still no way around the cutting in issue.
After a week or so of brewing I came up with the concept of cutting the top 3 gears off a Sram PG 990 cassette and turning the back down so it can be moved in further. This is trickier than it sounds as all the sprockets and riveted through to the back face. Those were carefully cut off on the lathe, the back trimmed down and the remaining 3 hand riveted back on. The 11T also had to be filed out so it would fit fully on the free hub body and an extra 11T had to have its teeth ground off to act as a lock ring. After several evening of turning, grinding and beating it was produced; a 6 speed cassette (23-20-17-14-12-11) with the top 3 on the alloy carrier.
So heres hopeing that it works well. Ill report back after the first outing.

Nice one
as a note though, most road mechs will work with up to 27T cassette sprockets

Looking good, centralising the cassette also solves the Hi/Low limit screw carry on that happens with the x9 (limiting it to 6 gears means the high limit screw fowls the mech on the way back down getting into the 11)
Have you weighed the whole lot?

Yeah should be all good with that setup, I didn't realize so many gears were spidered on the 990s

Yea on the web it only show 5 but i got one with 6 hence the reason i went sram over shimano. Shimano would have been a hell of a lot easier to modify.

yea works mint aye, have you seen my 7spd ultegra cassette on my bike?
It goes down in 2's from 23 to 11 which is perfect for most down hill tracks.
Digging tomorrow?
Dave.

na havnt seen that. Sounds like it is spot on. Im sorta stuck with the top 3 due to the carrier (23-20-17). I reckon 22-20-17-15-12-11 would be pretty mint. Anyone got a 15T ring kicking around?
No official digging on tomorrow but im going down ponos at about 10.30 to move some dirt. Any company would be welcome.

What about a steel hope freehub body and pg970 11-26 DH cassette?
Not nearly as fun as busting the lathe out, I suppose...

They are silly silly mad heavy, just the 26 tooth from one of those weighs about the same as the top 3 cogs on a spider from a 980

What he said. I also hate those DH cassettes with a passion. And i wouldnt use the top 3 on them either - i hardly used the 23T on the PG 970 that i had on.

Yea that would be mint. I think the one thats in there is a shimano one. Shes a bit of a basdrat child so im not expecting anything flash when it comes to shifting under power. Grab it off ya tomorrow sometime?
