Whos backdoor at lunchtime today? Is there alternating backdoors being used? Could get a bit chopped up and sloppy if it's the same one every time

I didnt see any "no bikes" sign at the bottom.
Oh well, I don't feel too guilty as there was lots of walking involved anyway.
On another note - Carparts extension!!! First time I've seen it taking shape. How good will that be??

You didn't see a no riders sign at the bottom because there isn't one. Theres only one at the top.

It's definitely a nice track, but also definitely closed (there have been a number of "no bikes" signs at the top and bottom over the last 3 years). It also crosses someones private land (when you're close to the house towards the bottom) - one of the main reasons for no bikes - the owner apparently doesn't mind walkers but doesn't want bikers down there.
This trail is also under negotiation as we try and get legal access to ride down it (or another trail that would be built to do the same job), so it would be really good if it wasn't ridden until the agreement is gotten...

Is the very top section, that starts at about the turbine road entrance, a 'bike ok' track? Or is the whole thing off limits?
It's a real shame that it's not bike friendly, because that is a great way to get up to the turbine from the central city.
Oh well, might have to use the tip track for my next lunch time adventure.

You could go up the track that takes you from holloway road up to denton park which is at the bottom of the roller coaster. though maybe that is illegal too? I have never seen signs and never come across* a walker on it.

Apparently "holloway road" (what we call the track from the rollercoaster down into holloway road) is illegal as well, although there have never been any signs on it. There is a sign on george denton park (the playground at the bottom), so I've tended to view it as "don't ride the horizontal/flat track from denton park but off the rollercoaster is fine.
I've met a couple of walkers on the track, but I find that a cheery "hullo - how are you today?" or something like that works really well. Nothing like being friendly, stopping, and saying hello and thank-you to make people get along better...

I recently asked Wellington City Council about riding in that area. This was their response:
"Generally speaking all trails are open to mountain biking unless otherwise signposted.
There is no mountain biking allowed from Ashton Fitchett Dve to Holloway Rd or from George Denton Park to Holloway Rd.
If there is no signage it is because it has been removed by someone.
Our mountain biking in Wellington brochure contains lots of information, this should be available at the Info centre by the main library.
WCC is currently reviewing its MTB trails which may result in more areas becoming available."

I remember riding with you and a bunch of others in the past, when I said "I don't want to ride down that track because it is off limits" i was laughed at, with everyone havnig a go at trotting out some obviously bogus excuse along the lines of "I don't see a sign" "well, the sign isn't located at the entrance I'm using" " oh the sign has a picture of a roadbike on it" etc.
seems to be a fair bit of public face stuff occurring, and some sort of feeling behind the scenes of "oh, but it will be ok if WE ride it..."
that's wellington all over, though

That is true. I've ridden back door, and it's damned fun. I've even ridden it knowing that there should be a sign up there somewhere, but wasn't at the time.
I haven't ridden it in over 12 months though - ever since the situation about that area of land and the negotiations about proper access rights in there.
A little bit of context is wonderful. And I'm a better person now, obviously.

I've done the backdoor a number of times.... Awesome trail - but as pointed out - off limits. I beleive it is one of the trails under review.
I learned it was illegal whilst checking out routes for the PNP Bunch rides and have not ridden it since. I now run it which is good for the shanks.
It shouldn't need saying, but please avoid trail you know is off limits. There are some great people in Wellington who work tirelessly to gain access to off limits trails. Riding them is a bit selfish and something it would be grand if you could think twice about.
