I always get the cheapest component that matches my requirements
I suspect that Gamut bash guards are not cheap, but they are light and have some shock absorption, and should keep the chain on. These things I am wanting

Carbon and bash shouldn't be used in the same sentence, having seen what happens to a carbon MRP plate when it meets rock I wouldn't be spending my hard earned dollars on one.

Robbies bottom bracket is too playful so unless it miraculously reaches resonance theres only an incredibly small chance of a collision happening

Agreed, the ideal material would be durable and absorb impacts.
The holes in the Gamut bashguard would help with this
Assuming a carbon bash guard was tough enough (and it could possibly be if it was baked correctly) it would be far too hard to absorb any shock, and that could do nasty things to whatever it was bolted onto.

where do you get these absurd ideas from - until recently most bash guards were aluminium, a substance not particularly noted for absorbing shock - yet dh tracks were NOT littered with destroyed cranks

MRP alloy plates bent well before any damage was done to cranks, they were/are made of cheese.

And if you're hitting your bashguard on something hard enough that you're likely to brake other components then thats the least of our worries

The prices do seem expensive for example, you can get the P30 for $260 incl postage off chainreactioncycles.com
Get an e13, can get those for $200 from good dealers
