Simon reaches the finish
Simon rolled into Antelope Wells at 5 2 p.m. Wednesday for a fourth-place finishing time of 19 days, five hours and two minutes. "It was a fairly tedious stretch of road riding here, but overall amazing ride. Lots of incredible, beautiful country. Exceedingly difficult riding at times as well." He wanted tothank the race organizers and other riders in the race - "great camaraderie there." He said he would thank his supporters on his blog. "I'm kinda glad it's over. I'm really glad I've done the Great Divide Race. Mission accomplished! Yee-haw!"
Congratulations, Simon, for putting in a consistently strong ride and for finishing fast. Only a handful of riders in the history of the Great Divide Race have ridden the route in less than 20 days, and we have four so far this year.
Jenn happily on the trail
Jenn called from Cuba at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. "I'm really pleased to be here. It's taken me a while to get here. It's taken me all day. I'm so skinny and wasted. I have legs like twiglets. I have no muscles left. I've done a lot of walking today." She had planned to leave Abiquiu early Tuesday with Mary and Steven from the Tour Divide. But when she tried to stand up in the morning, she nearly fell over. She went to the medical center in Abiquiu and obtained some fairly heavy-duty antibiotics "like horse pills." But said they seemed to be doing the trick, and she said she felt a lot better today. She said she had a good day with "really English weather" - billowing clouds and nice cool, breezy air with no thunderstorms. "Really glad to be pedaling again," she said. She was planning to press on toward Grants tonight, but didn't know how far she was going to get because she was "really tired." She wanted to be in Pie Town at lunchtime, "but that might be pushing it a bit given how late it is now."
Jenn sounds much better than she did during her previous call-in from Abiquiu. The antibiotics must be workingto kill the Giardia off, but any amount of that time with that bug would zap anyone of most of their energy and strength, let alone someone who has just ridden 1,800 miles of the Great Divide Race. Jenn mentioned she was eating everything in sight in Cuba and hoping to keep the food "where it belongs." She's really excited to be back on the trail, and seems to be eyeing a strong push for the border. The distance from Cuba to Pie Town is more than 200 miles, so the fact that she's aiming for lunchtime Thursday shows she's still as determined as ever to pedal fast. But a day ago she couldn't even stand up without feeling woozy, and today she pedaled 80 miles! So here's hoping she gets her hard-earned legs back. Go Jenn, go!
