Why not do it in the real mountains and cross the sthn alps a few times??

You could do some fantastic routes from Queenstown thru to Nelson...

A length of the south Island alpine ride - I remember reading about that in the 90's in a NZ mtb mag. Done twice before I think.

The marketing/PR value of having call-ins of some sort shouldn't be overlooked - particularly in year 1. Having the folks at home able to monitor performance would be a great publicity generator. .
That I fully agree with
But more importantly I feel is for the safety of riders

Nice idea ryda, would certainly be something NZ hasn't really seen before.

My views (I know you value them highly)

2000km is a long way. Well I'm sure you will get heaps of people saying they are keen when push comes to shove how many people in NZ really have the time, money and most importantly the ablity for such a undertaking?

I can't see checkpoints being a major isssue and certainly don't think you need to go to the complexity of GPS's etc. How about the compeditors having to send pix in from various checkpoints? Nearly everyone has a pix capable phone these days and you could use the pix's for promotion/media stuff.

Safety and legal requirements. While I have no idea about such stuff I having a feeling this will be the most difficult aspect of orgaising such a race. NZ is unfortunatly becomeing an increasing litigious society and I would certainly want to make sure I wasn't liable in anyway for any financial or legal repocussions if something did go wrong.

I like your idea Ryda (and SC). Agree with Nick_K re numbers of people entering. You would only really expect 20 max?

Someone said use pubs as a check-in. I think most pubs/dairies would mind having a sign in list which you would check daily as a verification of actual position on top of a call in where possible. I love the audio of call-ins the GDR provide

Service stations could make for a good checkpoint location - open 24 hours, relatively regular locations, and could then open the door for a gas company sponsorship deal...

you have to remember not to expect to many starters, I would be surprised if there was more than 20

I agree with Nick K also as far as PXTing because we have to remember riders could turn up at anytime to a checkpoint and also once the riders have started they are on there own

My plan is as GDR, no entry fee, so no entry form as such, so therefor no one is entering an event....so as far as Safety and legal requirements not sure. But I will speak with a couple of event management type people anyway

Skint keep it in mind the lack of starters ..Sponsorship for a such a low key ride will be next to impossible...I think it will boil down to finding a MTB keen rich person

Sounds like an awesome idea. I would definately be in for a south island version! Depending on travel costs and logistics would love to do the North Island one as well!

I'm thinking that if it is organised in the context of a group ride (a normal vorb ride or road trip type thing) then there would be no issues with road safety, and all the logistical stuff that comes with an event as it is not officially an event!! Everyone is responsible for themselves and you the, organiser/s, is/are not liable for anything as there is nothing to be liable for.

There could be a suggested gear safety list for participation in the ride, but ultimately the individual is responsible for being self sufficient.

My 2c worth!!!

I think this was done by Dave Mitchell, Guy Wyn Williams (the Ground Effect guy) and someone else I cant remember? I think it took them about a month from D'urville Island to the bottom of the south island using virtually no sealed roads. I would contact them for advice on a south island route. Dave in particular would know every off road route in the whole south island I would guess.

I like the service stations idea. But, so much of NZ has cell coverage, it's probably not a biggie. Servos would be good food stops though.

Why do you need sponsorship? Advertising (via the web) is free. Using the GDR model, you're not providing anything. Progress can be tracked via a blog (free). No need for registration pack, prizes etc
