Don't ever complain about the price of milk and cheese Paranoid

Actually, I am really quite happy to pay the true cost via the products I buy that get transported. I would much prefer that, so that the most cost effective / efficient solution (and I would include environmental damage in that equation) is used over time to ship my milk and cheese.

Bottom line the actual cost of the road usage / damage caused by the transportation should be put onto the product directly. That can then should be passed onto the supply chain. It's more transparent that way IMHO. Then we might be a bit smarter about where our food / products / whatever come from, in the long run.

But NZers are suckers for the 'under dogs' and the Road Transport Forum are soooooo hard done by. I mean, them and their Council for Infrastructure Development mates never get their own way...yeah right.

I'm going to be a roznuc here and point out that the majority of 44 tonne GCM (thats Gross combined mass) vehicles have more than 18 wheels. In fact the last time I saw a unit with 18 wheels it was loaded to 32 or so tonnes (actually I was driving the exact setup today).
An 8 axle unit has 28 wheels which are usually 275 or 295mm wide. If we take the weight to be 44 tonnes gross each tyre exerts around 1.57 tonnes on the road surface. Which in the grand scheme of things is kcuf all.

As for the protests, the silly kcirps driving at 5kph on the southern motorway really kcufed things up. That sort of behaviour is just plain dumb and I would hope they lose their jobs for being such arrogant basdrats.

I was waiting for you to show up on this one dude... Love

I was wanting to hear from someone who's actually in the thick of it. Smile

I wouldnt say I'm in the thick of it but I feel pretty strongly about the issue as road transport puts a roof over my head Smile

Biggest bugger I find right now is that due to the rising costs our two logging trucks are now earning next to no money. So in the next 2 or 3 weeks we will be selling both of them. Its pretty shattering for Dad and I as it's been 6 years of hard work (with 4 rollovers and 2 motor replacements) and in the end he'll come out with 4/5ths of kcuf all and some grey hairs Sad

Thanks for correcting me, I'm not the sort of driver to hctib about RUC prices hence why yesterday when the protests were happening I was beavering away on the forklift loading my truck and tidying the yard Smile

Definitely agree with you about the above comment too. I would be happy to run 40 foot containers to a local rail head all day, we'd still earn money and the consumer would be better off. I see that as a win win situation (well it looks like it'd work to me) and am in full support of it. There will always be room for trucks in the transport system, it's just a case of integrating operations to increase overall efficiency.

It will take a lot of development but yes it can be very efficient. Norske Skog Tasman transports a vast amounts of its products via rail. As does the large forestry company (It changes hands so often I dont know who owns it) around here.

They must be pretty awesome trucks they use to do that, I mean with the oceans and all... Double Thumbs Up

I don`t see any reason why linehaul can`t be replaced by Railfreight...

Just because the government owns the railways doesnt automatically mean that they`ll be inefficient. I mean look at Air NZ...

Intrinsically rail is more efficient than road transport. The cost per ton of freight moved (when looked at holistically) is quite a bit lower.

Something else to consider is the breaking of the rail and watersiders unions who were a major cause of the inefficiency of the old railways (among other government departments)

Of course, working for Transit, (Soon to be the NZ Transportation Agency), I could be accused of bias... Blush

{Posted via mobile.vorb.org.nz} I look at rail through my rose tinted glasses and see happy children and big beautiful steam engines and think that they must be the majical answer to all of our problems..

Thank god I am forced to subsidise a complete waste of money just so some douchebags can feel good about 'doing something'

Don`t suppose you`d like to actually substantiate why rail is a waste of money, would you? I mean with some actual facts and figures, maybe an educated opinion gleaned from time spent in the transportation industry, or perhaps some secret government insight you`re privy to, unlike us mere mortals...? Paranoid

As an aside - steam engines... happy children? what the hell are you on about? Do you even pay taxes / vote / do jury service / qualify as a citizen?

Opinions are like ersa-holes, everyone has one and they`re generally as valuable...

I know it`s fun to jump on the "big trucks are great and wonderfull, because I aspire to the masculine ideal that is the truck-driver" band-wagon, but I mean get with the programme.... Tongue it

(This interweb thingee shure is good for winding folks up isnt it - so much fun to be had) Big Grin

Aside from missing my point, my informed ranting comes from time spent researching all manner of transport issue when I worked in the Parliamentary Library.

As for facts and figures, the fact that the ral lines are uneconomic without subsidies makes them a waste of money. If they cannot turn a profit, as the fact that previous owner was going to close most of the lines as they wernt making money even when subsidised by the govt points to.

So we are now going to subsidise them even more, for what gain? Are the trains somehow going to become majically profitable again? How to get all the goods to and from the trains, build more train lines?
