Because America doesn't have taxes or a meddling government? I think you're looking at the US through rose-tinted glasses...It's by no means perfect here, but it's not as bad as all that either.

No, the debt on a truck, or a lathe, or a server is a business cost, with tax deductibility and other advantages.
Your business goes bust and you write it off, if your'e smart the company you set up bears the effects and you have no personal liability.
The debt on a degree is personal, it follows you around and instantly puts you in a higher tax bracket, it'll even follow you overseas, and a few people could buy controlling shares in a rig with their student debt...

But all you've done is confirm that inyour eyes "hard-working salt of the earth truckers" = good
"lazy scrounging students" = bad
Despite the fact that one of these groups has a lot more long term value to the country than the other... Dropkick excepted Tongue it

My point was all the things that supposedly make NZ an attractive place to live relative to the rest of the world seem to be heading down the tihster.

Cheap to live? rising a tad quicker than inflation would predict...
Justice system: kcufed - lift a couple of big rocks out of the ground and get 3 years, knock off some twin babies cos they were being a pain in the esra get away scot free.
Then theres the land itself, what sets us apart from places like New York is that we have oodles of country just out from the city for anyone who wants to make a short trip. The government wants to confound how quickly thats becoming inaffordable for many, but hey Huh

You cant knaw on about how great NZ is compared to everywhere else anymore, societys going down the tihster (how many murders a year here compared to 10 years ago?), the economy is down the toilet. And most people who are worth keeping seem to be pulled overseas

lazy scrounging students are bad. Why do they need loans? Are they not taught what to do with money?
