tis about time they paid for the damage they do to the roads. they've been getting off scott free for too many years to the detriment of all other road users, and the detriment of the rail network. i'm totally with Jeanette Fitzsimons on this one, make the fat kcufer truckers pay.

Actually, you'll pay, they aint gonna eat the costs, they pass them on.
And the protest is over the sudden, unanounced hike in road user charges, and it affects all diesel drivers, not just trukies.
A 1% increase in their expenses = a price rise in every single shop near you.

The suspicous part of me wonders if the timing of increasing fees for road transport companies coincides with the govt's purchase of the rail? Perhaps they are trying to give rail freight a helping hand.

Nah that would not be it........

It was actually really pleasant riding to work in Wellington this morning. Even though I was heading in the opposite direction to the truckies protest the roads were dead... bliss!

This country will be a better place with less trucks on the road and more rail and local shipping freight carrying.
guess who said...
Quote:
It is time to stop subsidising the trucking industry and price transport on a level playing field if New Zealand is to make the transition to a sustainable economy, says .......

"At the moment, truck drivers only pay 56 percent of their costs to the economy, compared to rail freight users who pay on average 82 percent and ordinary motorists who pay 64 percent, according to the Ministry of Transport’s Surface Transport Costs and Charges study from 2005.

"This distorts the decisions of freight customers when choosing whether to send their products by road or rail because true costs are not reflected in the prices.

"It is important to remember that Road User Charges for trucks have been increased only once since 1989,"

"If we want to see more of our heavy freight on rail instead of big trucks on the road, we need fair Road User Charges.

True, but not as cost effective, and if you (and everyone wlse) is willing to pay 10-25% more for everything then it can be done. Plus we'd need a massive rail upgrade, some new ports, a few new ships, so a loan of several billion dollars would be needed too.

I'm not disputing you, just stating that it's too expensive to change. It would have to be gradual, and while we're investing in the alternatives, they get more expensive and then can't compete and have to be bailed out by the government again, so nothing changes. Pity we didn't employ a perfect rail & shipping network 30 years ago as we'd be sweet now.

That study doesn't take into account the 11% increase in RUCs for vehicles over 6 tonnes introduced 1 April 07.

Always good to quote outdated data though.

Well, lets get one thing out there from the start. I work in the freight industry.

The protest more than anything else is about the sudden increase, especially when we had assurances that there would be a one month warning.

I don't think there is any disputing trucks wear the roads out - 45 tonne spead over 30 tyres. Probably not quiet as bad as you think though. After all a SUV at 2.5 tonne only has 4 tyres to spread the weight. Don't forget though that those truckers that you are complaining about are delivering your food to your supermarket, your bikes to your local retailer etc etc. They are contributing to the economy. A necessay evil may be.

Who do you think is going to pay. If you said the end user, full marks.

Rail network, we are all for it and use it heavily. We would like to use it more too. Pitty it is unreliable and does not go too many places off SH1. Good luck getting goods to Wanaka via rail.

So overall it is a storm in a tea cup. Costs have gone up. The prices we the consumers will pay for everything will rise accordingly. Just remember that fat boy you are bagging is just trying to make a living like you and I. Run trucks off the road if you want, but you may find the consequences to be a bit more far reaching than first thought.

We tried to get Rail taking care of moving the Nation years ago and it basically didn't deliver. Society has through convenience and time whether you are aware of it or not provided the opportunity for a Truck based transportation system to develop and become effective. It is now a giant and works - the infrastructure is there and YOU have helped create it so get used to it and start supporting your creation. We ALL benefit or pay the price depending on how things develop, I suggest we support any actions that contribute to lower prices because it will ultimately be us who benefits long term.
