As and F grade racer, I wouldn't worry about it until you move up the ranks a bit Smile You've got a sweet bike as it is.

Unless of course, you're suffering from the bling bug. Remember though, for the price you're thinking about blowing on wheels you could just buy a cheap traning bike, let alone wheelset.

this is what I have finally worked out. I am an F grade racer ... so maybe I should spend more time on training than on bling (although I still can't help myself some of the time ....)

I don't care how good or bad a rider you are; if you want bling buy bling!

Everyone needs a little psychological pick-me-up every now and then, and shopping has been proved over and over again to make people happy.

To begrudge someone some nice kit because they aren't a top athlete is just reverse snobbery - not to mention that if it wasn't for rampant consumerism by the general population then even elite athletes wouldn't have access to bling because it would be uneconomically viable to produce!

I'm not saying that - it is coming from me who has more bling than skills Laugh Out Loud
Someone's sig (maybe Clarky or Noballs or someone) used to say "Don't buy upgrades, ride up grades". So true. I still indulge in far too much bling however, although I've toned it down lately Smile

My theory goes like this:

I go slower than most riders Blush
Therefore I spend more time on my bike than most (per event) Eh? (I get good value for my entry fees!!!)
Therefore I have much more time to enjoy bling
Therefore I should buy bling Big Grin

Short version = I like shiny things!!! Blush

In this case, it might work against the rider though. How demoralising it must be to shell out $1000s for new wheels and not notice the difference because your Ultegra ones were still pretty damn good. If this isn't the case, why aren't you selling me new wheels! I have the same bike as this chap...

bling is important. gotta look good.

another aspect to consider, the money you might put into a new wheelset.. consider putting into coaching, from a performance perspective this is going to see you realise better gains more than anything you can buy. well legally anyway.

I thought you were already doing plenty of shopping bro! Big Grin

I wasn't actually responding to the original question. My point was not that new bits will make you go faster - invariably they won't except at the very top levels - but that it should be totally fine to buy yourself something flash just because you feel like it without everyone getting all sanctimonious and ssipy about it.

surely you mean "buy a training bike" - that being a way of buying a MUCH flasher race bike and retire your current ride to training bike status
