A serial "kid basher" now, after the legislation has been passed, will not think: "Oh dang, Im not allowed to get my 4X2 and bash my kid. Better not do it." The law passing will have no effect on that person.

But ... a parent who would normally lovingly correct their child by a smack on the bottom, with the aim of correcting and redirecting that child in the right way, would suddenly be put off of that method of parenting.

Who gets the short end of the stick in the deal then? The good or the bad parent?

Besides, since when did the government decide how we are and aren't allowed to raise our kids? Sounds a bit like Brave New World to me ...

The law change to prevent acts of horrific child abuse from going unpunished, not to persecute parents who smack kids lightly. By and large, thats exactly what has occured.

The only people who remain upset with the removal of the discipline-defence for assaulting kids from law are misguided bible-bashing draters who don't take to kindly to a Government (rather than an imaginary friend who lives in space) telling them who they can and can't assault.

Rubbish Big Grin Its no more effective in stopping kids getting beaten badly than the Dog-chipping law has been at stopping people getting mauled by dogs!

Laws against murder and rape don't appear to be stopping offenses from occurring either. We should probably get rid of those laws too!

I wouldnt be surprised.

I dont think smacking is the only way to dicipline a child, and it should be used as a last resort. But some circumstances call for it.

I dont see how people can get so excited over a little tap on the hand/bum

We're not - while I disagree with corporal punishment entirely, it's not little hits that upset me - it's when some jerkoff beat the poop out of their kid with a bit of wood or a riding crop and got away with it under Section 69 that ssiped me off.

Accordingly the bill was ammended again to allow Police the discretion not to prosecute for minor breaches of the law. This is exactly what appears to be happening.

Assault is "the least touching in anger". A shove, a punch, an axe to the head are all assault. When did you last here of charges for shoving, the cops have used there discretion since there have been cops when it comes to this.

The Bill removed the defence under section 59 which allowed "reasonable" use of force by a parent or caregiver against a child in their care. So those who give a light spank are (and were before) unlikely to get charged, but the riding crop and 4x2 kcuf holes are more likely to get convicted, a good thing if ever there were one.

And JB the govt has been telling parents how to bring up their kids for centuries, child labour laws, education law, immunisation laws.

And MattV you used the phrase "PC Brigade" and are therefore guilty of being a drat...

I wanna start a petition for a referendum banning religious groups care to sign it?

I almost think it would be funnier (and get more signatures) if it was a referendum banning religious groups from petitioning for a referendum. After all, plenty of religious groups are harmless and rarely petition the government over bulltihs like "good parenting" by way of hitting. But in either case I'll sign yours if you sign my one, which will ask the question "Should all male police officers be required to grow and maintain mustaches?"

As apposite as ever, Crusty. Thanks for clarifying it so well.

You have a real gift for getting to the nub of issues - have you ever considered becoming a lawyer?
