I have a broken spoke in my rear wheel, is it ok to ride on just to get it to the shop? I thought about fixing it myself but that whole "trueing the wheel" thing looks like too much work!

I have ridden several km over gravel roads on a broken spoke. So long as you are gentle, it'll be fine, however, the more you ride it, the more likely it's gonna break others and buckle worse. I would only ride on it if it was necessary or you really didn't give a damn.

I just want to ride it far enough to get it fixed - but I'd hate for my wheel to explode going down Ngaio gorge!

You can, but slowly, particularly under braking. I'd go very, very lightly down Ngaio!

I just rode home with a wheel that failed completely through the join. Had to jump on it a bit to get it to run through my fork.

I'll be building a new one tonight.

I had a friend do exactly that just last week, and even worse it was his first ride out on his new bike. Crazy

But yea like everyone else has said, ride gently.
