Plenty of uranium ore in the Buller Gorge?

You should have seen it 15 years ago. It was like the stream in the Simpsons with the three-eyed fish in it. That association are heroes in my book.

So mount the station on rubber. Free wind is fine for wellington but there is more to NZ.

Anything north of the Rumutakas does count for much in book.
I'm all for windmills, I love the things.

Except for a bunch of trucks during construction..
But that would be nothing comapred to the destruction caused by a dam, or the insanity of a nuclear power station in NZ.. |
Not all dams cause destruction.. large ones can, smaller ones can have very little impact.. While I like the idea of another wind farm, one of the hurdles to overcome with the resource consent will be the cumulative impact - the Makara wind farm has consent, Mill Creek wind farm is in the consent process, and now Long Gully is proposed to be used. That will create a long line of turbines, which can definately have an impact on the visual landscape - look at Palmy North. Not saying it is bad, but I am sure it will be an issue that will come up.

Uranium is a scarcer resource than oil I believe. Save it for the bombs.

Um have you Seen Long Gully? It is a desolate steep landscape of gorse and goats !!
If you like the idea of an imported fire risk invading the hills, and you think gorse is pretty, you have my condolences. The original flora and fauna is gone.
The idea of large fans rotating upsets some people, but it beats the alternatives.
Bear in mind that this gully is not a nice place to be, it is not a tourist area, and the ecology has been massively destroyed. Putting in a few small turbines in such an incredibly windy area is just good sense.
I should know, I live close by.

Have I seen Long Gully? Well, I have inspected the bottom of the pig shute face first (during JK's race on a hartail with a whole 3 inch travel fork), I have fallen out of a tree (apparently), and I spent a LOT of time helping construct the freeride track (not sure what the current name is though). So yes, I have indeed seen long gully.
All I was saying above is that an issue likely to rise within the resource consent process relates to cumulative impact - that is all. I personally like wind turbines and think it would be a great way for the Watsons to continue to supplement their income.
As for your gorse reference - all the yanks kept commenting on the yellow flowers that appeared in a biking vid that was shot at long gully - so they do have a use...

15 years ago I lived 2 doors down from the Dairy, bottom of Happy Valley road, on a section that had that stream running through the back yard - I remember what it was like... from what/who I've seen I wouldn't be suprised if it was the same crowd making noise about a wind farm, that's all.

15 years ago you were nine. You barely know tihs from shinola now, so I imagine you were utterly clueless then...

By the way, I lived at 89 Happy Valley Road then 6 Robertson St from 1993 until 1999, so used to commute up Happy Valley Road almost every day alongside that stream.
