Hi all

I am a volunteer for Cycle Aware Wellington. I am accountable for coordinating submissions to the councils in the region.

There is a biggie coming (the WCC Draft Cycling Policy) and there is loads of ongoing conversations about safety.

In order to better inform our submissions, I am compiling a map (see link below) showing the places where the road design is likely to induce an accident sooner or later. I would like to use the wisdom of the crowds (your wisdom!) to compile this map.

Can I count on you to contribute to this Google Map every now and then? Please add your own black spots, as they occur to you. The map is open for all.

Please give a meaningful description (e.g.: "Cambridge Terrace - Approaching the Basin") and a description telling others why this is a blackspot. If you can, please add a link to pictures, stories, and other information.

You can also add comments to existing blackspots.

I have started with a few blackspots - now you add yours!

Have fun, and keep pedalling.

Andre

I'm on dial up, so won't check map. Perhaps someone can tell me if the Cuba junction by Southern Cross / Real Groovy is on there? I've been hit there, as has Lisa, and I've seen lots of near misses.

I added it for you, but I didn't write a description sorry...pressed the "ok" button too quick. Sad

I also put in the Cobham Drive eastern roundabout. Diabolical to change lanes there...

This is a good idea. I've added one near my house that I seem to have near misses on every other day.

Good to see someone's already got the chaytor street one... the scares the bejeebus out of me some mornings.

Not from punters pulling out of Curtis street, but from munters pulling into the bus lane without indicating about 500m up the road to escape the backlog of traffic.

Annoys the ssip out of me, it does. A rumble strip would be good, some policing of it and getting the clowns that are driving where they're not supposed to be would also be nice.

One potential blackspot is Featherston Street out side the Ibis Hotel. The city council in their wisdom has changed the clear way outside the hotel to a taxi parking zone. There's plenty of space on the two side streets for bus/taxi parking so who had the brain explosion to change this area.

Added a couple for Adelaide Rd.

Have reviewed some of the others - some of which didn't seem like a big deal to me. Like exiting the Basin - just wait for the traffic to stop, then cross. And the pedestrians on Bunny street - surely it's not hard to brake and yell?

My markers indicate areas where my life is at risk, not places where I sometimes get mild grumpiness from inconveniences

Look for the 'edit' button in the left-hand sidebar, click it and a menu of actions will appear at the top of the map. Smile

I agree with this - it doesn't do us any good to stick down hundreds of spots. Save it for the critical ones, which means taking ownership of your part in any close calls, as well as the fact that a car can menace you on the best designed bit of road in the world if they're not on their game.

Road design is one thing, random accidents/near misses are quite another...
