There are lots of freeriders in Taranaki, but not a lot of free rides that I;m aware of - pretty much everywhere is valuable dairying land or national park.

I'm not sure if Colson Road is still up and running, but a few years back people were building structures in there. Similarly there are some steeper areas in the Mangamahoe trail area that may be available, but would strongly recommend getting NP MTBers or Council to update you on the status of new trails in that area (to avoid any structures being removed).

Other than that my best advice if you want to build some fr tracks would be to head inland from Waitara/tikorangi or Stratford, find some farms with forestry blocks on them, and knock on the farmer's doors. If you're lucky they might let you put some trails in.

Good luck, and keep us posted if you need some diggers Double Thumbs Up

Agree on Mangamahoe being wet, and Big Wednesday being the answer.

There was a farm out Uruti way for sale recently that had a bunch of mtb trails and jumps on it. If you could track down some old real estate mags, find the agent, and see if they would pass on a proposal to the new owners...?

Alternately there must be some commercial forests around - even small ones. I rode a bit in Te Wera on the Whangamomona road a while back, and there was some definate scope in there.

Or approach ShellTodd and see if they have any spare land around the tank farm above Backs Beach?

Spent some time a few years back scouting locations for trails/jungle rides/races that I never got round to doing then, but thinking of putting together this summer...

We'd built a few lines out at Colson Road. Nothing major or freeride, just a few dirt jumps and that.

But then some tool went and stole the spades and stuff we'd stashed out there, so the track building kind of came to an end.

We've had a couple of jumps broken down out there, but once we rebuilt them they've stayed in place.

It's not a bad place to ride if the wind isn't blowing the stench through.

If you head further up, the hills get steeper. You'd be able to build some structure in there I reckon.
