With oil shooting up, metals shooting up too ... surely if we plan to cycle our way through this period (ie cycle until we get public transport as a viable alternative to car ownership), we should stock up now on the basics:
tubes can be had for $3 now.
tires
chains
cassettes
Am I the only one making a survival kit of bike parts?

Well, once I've sacrificed things it would be a shame to let all that flesh go to waste......
I should probably add a flint or some matches to my kit. And some BBQ sauce.

I didnt realise metal prices had come down. I was working in manufacturing (brass, and lots of gold, silver and rhodium plating) and the prices were going up and up.
Eating ... vege garden ... and the sacrifices of course.
If the tubes are 10 for $30, and have been since oil was $50/brl, then surely at $140/brl, they'll start going up at some point soon?

Couldn't you just tie them together so that the next time you visit a place you could use some of that kinetic energy?

metal may have come down but the truck that gets it from a-b is charging more for fuel. Which means joe punter will pay more if they live in an island in the pacific as the boat/plane uses the fuel too.

Oooh good plan, if I had enough I could tie them to the garage and the back of the car, drive somewhere, then get pulled all the way home!

What metals market are you referring to? Flat rolled steel ain't getting any cheaper which seems to be fuelled by the demand out of China. And scarp prices for steel in NZ have nearly tripled in the past year ($150 tonne to $400-$450 a tonne).

Base metals prices have peaked and are falling, probably still have a bit to go: Pb, Zn, Ag, Cu, Ni etc. The cost of Steel includes shipping (oil) and manufacturing costs (high due to capacity constraints), and the (currently insanely high and soon to fall) prices of Iron ore and Coking Coal.
Gold is also high, but that's largely speculative.
How this affects the price of bike parts is anyone's guess, because there are a lot of other factors involved.
