Something I've been thinking about for ages too, sure old cars weren't that safe being so light but with modern technology cars can be built light and strong, like the Smart, 730Kg and its basically a roll cage with a body on it, very strong, plus a lighter car when it hits something does less damage to itself and others, its a win-win situation...
On the other hand if cars were more flimsy people would be more careful driving them, I would also make it compulsory for them to implode if they hit a cyclist.

Smart went broke.
I had a look at buying one of their 'sports' cars while I was in mainland Europe. Very nifty in a shoe box kind of way.

I have also seen a Swiss prototype car out on the road, that was basically an egg shaped survival cell, with a motorbike back end and two wheels/four bar suspension on the front (with fibre glass struts!). Looked like a heap of fun to drive, but probably too radical for Joe Knuckledrgger Public to consider as viable to use.
