I wonder why it will take 6 weeks until 1 July to tell the guards to stop charging.

Its a step in the right direction - no charge.
But honestly I wouldn't mind paying to take my bike on the service if they could GUARANTEE that I could get my bike on the train each and every time I wanted to, dirty or not.

............why can't they just tow an empty train trailer thingy on every train... |
My thoughts exactly, and empty carriage with the seats taken out, hmmmmm should we do something proactive like get a proposal/petition of sorts organised?

I imagine that a proposal/petition won't do much to sway their decision, because at the end of the day towing an empty carriage doesn't put more dollars in their pockets and would be more work/effort for their staff (which, to be honest, could offer better service to start with). I suppose it will all happen eventually, with no charge being the starting point, I just don't expect it to happen all at once.

Well I'll be... brought my bike in on the train this morning and the lady said to me '6 plus 4'. So I said, are you going to charge me for the bike? I've never been charged for it before' and she said 'don't start, I don't want to hear it' before handing me $10 worth of tickets and taking my $6.
I did notice there was one other bike in there. And that early train was much fuller than it used to be but I think a part of that is just that a lot of people start earlier these days as more people take advantage of flexible working hours (or to beat peak traffic/transport times).

Well thats pretty poor, a bit of consistency would be nice (and fair!). Won't have to worry about that for long though

I think the lesson is if you catch an early enough train they won't bother to argue

So she actually didn't end up charging you the extra $4?

Nope, just gave me an extra $4 worth of tickets. I handed her $6. Nothing more was said.
Would be a bit silly to charge me given they never have before and they're about to drop bike charges anyway. But I was all ready to argue my case if I had to. At $10 on the train it's cheaper to drive - that's not a good look for them.

That's pretty good work on her part - to start off with the 'don't start, I don't want to hear it' line and then bend the rules.
Surprised she didn't say "why don't you just ride that bike instead of taking ot on the train..."

Then she would have got the full run down of my programme and the logistics of my day. I don't think she would have been too interested in that... not that that would have stopped me

Instead of trashing a whole carriage to take bikes, why don't they take the seats out of the part at the end of some carriages where they have two long seats sitting opposite each other?
They could replace the seats with some form of bike rack, and instead of putting 'carpet' down in that area, they could have some form of smooth flooring, so it won't matter if the bike is muddy.
The only time I've ever put my bike on the train is after a muddy ride up Makara. The bike was the filthiest it had ever been and they let me on, no questions.

yeah its def a good start!
in the UK they just let you strap your steed in the same spot as the wheelchairs are supposed to go (never seen any wheelchairs use them!) so i guess as more people use the trains (as gas goes skyhigh), they will have to chuck a few more wheelchair possies in there to keep the ratio sweet, which the bikers can double team!
they just started to restrict bikes on trains during peak times as i left cause it was to crowded/popular hence the 3-6 month wait list for a folding brompton!
