The New Plymouth District Council has released its draft master plan for cemeteries including the new district cemetery which will be sited at the southern end of Lake Mangamahoe Forest near Egmont Village.

Part of the proposed cemetery if implemented according to the draft plan, will from 2013 take over land currently used by recreational mountain bikers riding on trails recently created by the New Plymouth Mountain Bikers.

These trails have been created in response to the loss of trails in the northern area of the forest due to logging of mature pine trees.

Recent events run in this area include the Taranaki Masters Games cross country, Taranaki Secondary Schools cross country and the Sparc Get2Go Challenge for secondary schools.

New Plymouth Mountain Bikers Inc would like to urge the mountain biking public to submit online and recommend to the council that the loss of current MTB facilities proposed in the draft plan needs to be offset by the council supplying improved MTB access to the areas closer to the Waiwhakaiho River that is not suitable for either coffin or cremation ash interments.

Also cemeteries are also usually provided with running water for hand washing etc and the council should be prompted to extend this facility to provide for drinking water and bike washing facilities as additional compensation.

The draft plan and maps can be down loaded from the NPDC website:

[CLICK HERE FOR THE DRAFT PLAN + MAPS]

Have your say about the draft master plan of the new district cemetery by using the online submission form.

Feedback closes: 5 pm on Wednesday 4 June.

The public's feedback will be considered and a report will go to the full council in August.

Aw parc just when there was some decent land for trail building in Taranaki.

Of course it would be only fair to give us some of Egmont National Park to compensate... Satan

Translator road Roll Eyes Sadly it's owned by doc and they treat mountain bikers much the same as possums Sad

There is a paper road between mangamahoe and meeting of the waters which might be worth developing into proper trails.

Good idea - submit it online to the NPDC using their submissions form re the cemetery plan - the more feedback mountain bike riders give them, the more notice they are likely to take and make alterations to the proposed layout or provide alternative facilities for the land they are likely to take for the new cemetery. Sneaky

I was going to meet with Doc some time soon to propose a mtb scoping ride of the Matemateonga walkway. Might have to mention translator road as well...

Nice thinking - That would make for a better ride out from town too.

One of the MAIN reasons they dont like bikers on the Translator is purely for safety. You could get some insane speed down there and if you hit a tramper coming round a blind corner it would be all sorts of nasty, not to mention flying off the track into a 200m freefall Crazy

You have a pm...

This news is very sad for mountain biking in the region. I did the Taranaki Masters race there last year and thought it was a great course. I just cant understand how, when mountainbiking is such a hugely growing sport, places like this can just be taken away with no consideration whatsoever for providing a comparable alternative. I think that DOCs attitude to MTBiking probably has a lot to do with it. You know what they say, if you can't beat them, join them......
Its not just a place to ride, its a training ground for young. aspiring MTbikers. Wish you all the best with your negotiations.

Done and done.
Two main points were that by reducing the number of active recreation facilities in the district the council would in essence be creating greater demand for the cemetary, and from a district marketing perspective it's just plain stupid to have a cemetary as the first thing visitors to NP see when they drive in from the south...
