Answer - No, I don't think so.

When you've got guys like Gordy, Yates, Ryan, Horgan, Odlin et al riding for the big teams it's very hard for a small team to inflict much influence on the end result - unless you've got some pretty big names up your sleeve.

At best you might be able to help chase down the breakaway's which usually feature the big teams in some capacity - then it's a bunch sprint which is a bit of a lottery anyway IMHO.

All BM8 races this season have been won by breakaways. With 12-14 teams competing there should be no excuse for breakaway's not being chased down before the finish line. Unfortunately the reality is that there's very little cohesion/ motivation in the peleton to work together and initiate the chase. It simply becomes a "best of the rest" race. Everyone looks at eachother wondering who's going to give chase and in the end no one does, or a few random individuals launch attacks which are pretty ineffective.

Also - it's bloody hard to stick together in one of those races because the peleton is so fluid. One minute your team mate is next to you, the next he's 5 riders in front or behind! Hard to work together in those conditions.

I don't agree with all of that, I wouldn't call star and garter one of the big teams and although we aren't riding for the open mens jersey we are still working together to ensure that Chris keeps his lead in the masters comp and trying to set up the best team member for the course in the position where they can do the best for themselves. In my books this is still team racing even if the race wins are going to the strongest riders (like paul, gordy and yates).

True - there are the smaller battles going on like for the masters, womens, teams etc and I have witnessed some pretty good teamwork going on within the bunch. I was referring to the overall GC winner which will always be dominated by the named cyclists. Hard to make an impression on them really.

At least you have something to ride for! Our team 'raison detre' is just for everyone to finish as close to the front as possible! Double Thumbs Up Perhaps I should be competing for the "Masters" jersey too since I am 36!! Blush

Gordy works full time now. But I think the reason he wins is that is he is just so much better looking than you guys!

Sadly I think that also explains why I go like a sack of s**t.
