During the winter Mountainbiking Otago run Sunday morning work parties, during which we build and maintain Dunedin MTB tracks. If you enjoy riding the tracks that we've built at places like Bethunes Gulley, Nichols Creek, Whare Flat and Signal Hill, please come along and lend a hand. The more people we have helping out, the sooner we'll have new tracks to ride. During the winter it’s also a great way to catch up with mates and get a free workout if the weather’s a bit off!

When: Sunday mornings 10am to 12noon (MTB ‘Church’)
Where: Nichols Creek, Bethunes Gulley, Whare Flat, Signal Hill
Bring: Grubbers, rakes, shovels, gloves, boots etc. Some tools will be supplied.

Details of upcoming work parties will be posted on the MBO website in the trail-building forum. We'll try to have these posted by Thursday evening. Check out the website at www.mountainbikingotago.co.nz

We'll also send out an email each week about where we'll be working, so if you'd like to be added to the email list, email workparty[at]mountainbikingotago.co.nz By signing up you'll also be expressing your support for MBO. Showing that we have a large number of supporters helps us when applying for funding applications and lobbying council.

Despite some early morning rain, it wasn't too bad at all up the hill. Rick, Brad, Adrian, Glen, John and his dog turned up to help break through a tricky section just above where the track first crosses the walking track.

Up till now you've had to carry your bike around an old slip. I was originally going to make a big dip through the slip but it turned out to be a bit to steep. Instead we cut the track into the bank and under an old tree. Some of the dirt that we removed came in handy, covering up a nearby rooty section and helping berm up another corner.

We still need to do a bit more cutting to make it flow properly, but at least the track is linked through now. It's one of the biggest cuts we've had to do, so a bloody good effort given that we were only digging for an hour and a half.

I've put some pictures up at http://www.mountainbikingotago.co.nz/html/modules/myalbum/viewcat.php?num=10&cid=31

My apologies for my absence Hamish. Worked yesterday morning (as I do with most Saturdays) so I enjoyed a sleep in, instead. Lame excuse I know.

Won't be there next week as I am helping out with the Otago Rally.

Hey Bill

No need to apologise - you've got to have at least one day off a week! We ended up with the perfect number of people for what we were doing, otherwise we would have been tripping over ourselves.

Hamish is away next two weekends but Church is still on... Gonna carry on from where we were last Sunday, just past the intersection with the walking track to Nicols Falls.

Meet:
Bottom of Nichols Creek track, Leith Valley Road about 200m up from where Islay St turns off (near the track up to the glow worm caves). If you're late then walk up the MTB track and we'll be just past where you cross over the walking track.

Tip: a real fast way up is via the 'gravel-dumper shortcut'. Walk up Leith Valley Rd 50m from carpark and find the track made for the gravel-dumpers. It goes straight up the ridge line. When you come to the first clearing follow the white-tape tags hanging in the trees. (Hamish made the quick route for the PD crew to get up and back asap). When you come out the top below the Macrocarpa trees just amble back down either track until you find the crew.

When:
10am Sunday 11th May

Bring:
A few tools, (axe is handy) but I'll have about 10 grubbers.

Contact:
Adrian 021 676739

Check the trail building forum on the MBO website at www.mountainbikingotago.co.nz on Sunday am if the weather is dodgy... (It will be on unless it's hosing down).

18 May Wrap Up

Finally a dry day up the hill... Big thanks to Adrian, Erin, John, Miff, Marcus and Tony for making the walk up the hill. We managed to tidy up 100m of PD dug track just below the Macrocarpas, and dig another 50m. You can now ride pretty much all the way up to the Macrocarpas, bar a couple of corners that we need to finish off.

It's still really dry up there, so it's a good time to get a ride in before it goes soggy for the winter. I've added Nichols to the Rides & Tracks section of the website - this has maps, directions etc.

I've always been meaning to go and have a ride/help out with this track. Doesn't look like the links to the maps on that page work though Sad

Yep. It doesn't even link to a valid file though. I noticed they have backslashes in them, where a URL should have a forward slash. Changed them to forward slashes but didn't make any difference. Would you mind uploading them here?

Strange - can you right-click on the link and save-as? What browser / os are you using?

I've attached the maps below just in case you still can't get at them...

cheers

Hamish

Cheers for that. It works using IE, not firefox. I've tried it using firefox on Fedora Core 8, Win Xp and Win Vista and no luck on any. Other pdfs load fine. Let me know if you want further info.

Track looks awesome, will definitely be giving that a go. Would be a sweet way to get back into town after playing around on snakes and ladders.

Ok, try it now. There was a backslash in there - not sure how as I was cutting and pasting...

MBO Trailbuilding - Sunday May 25 - Nicols Creek

At this stage I'm not sure if we'll be working on Sunday or not. The weather forecast is not looking good, and I might not be able to make it back to Dunedin in time. Please check the MBO website Saturday night / Sunday morning. If we do go up we'll tidy up the section of track below where we were working last weekend (ie we'll be somewhere above where the mtb track crosses over the walking track.

Meet:
Bottom of Nicols Creek track, Leith Valley Road about 200m up from where Islay St turns off (near the track up to the glow worm caves).

When you come out the top below the Macrocarpa trees just amble back down either track until you find the crew.

I've put a map of the track so far in the Rides and Tracks Section on the MBO website. This shows the different routes up the hill. http://www.mountainbikingotago.co.nz/html/modules/content/index.php?id=18

When:
10am Sunday 25th May

Bring:
A few tools, (axe is handy) but I'll have about 10 grubbers, shovels, spade, rakes etc.
